College of Education Faculty Assembly Agenda

October 28, 2014 BH 21

Dr. Staples called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Thurston moved approval of minutes of September 23 meeting, seconded by Dr. Harbstreit. Minutes approved as read.

Standing Committee Reports A. Academic Affairs – Dr. Burenheide (No Report) Dr. Burden – KSDE program review reports submitted. Reviews take place next Monday and Tuesday. Each program will have a team of people in Topeka reviewing and making decisions and drafting reports. Takes a couple of weeks for reviews. When reports are received and there are Areas For Improvement (AFIs) we will write the rejoinder(s). If satisfactory then the AFI(s) will be removed. The state department was not able to get enough team members for all our programs (5 programs don't have enough trained people to review – Agriculture, Journalism, FACS, Music, School Counseling). February 28, 2016 we begin our NCATE visit. Our IR needs to be turned in 8 months prior (July 1). Faculty profiles – only 32% have completed it (but 53% of CIs). This is for NCATE and 2025 purposes in the future. Dr. White applauded Dr. Burden for his outstanding work with program reviews.

B. Faculty Affairs - Dr. Lane – (No report) – Go Royals!

C. Student Affairs Committee - Dr. Larson is away – Sent electronically (No report)

D. Diversity for Community Dr. Kaff – The DCC is going to meet with Topeka School District(s) about needs in training in area of diversity.

E. Technology Dr. Knackendoffel – We are trying a new professional development training model called Sandbox, implemented by Cyndi Danner (15 minute sessions) every couple of weeks – Monday and Tuesdays at different times. The next session, Thinglink, will be offered next week. Another iPad camp in January (be on look out) the week before school starts.

Other Reports A. Faculty Senate - Dr. Knackendoffel - Report sent electronically Climate survey is underway – doesn’t have a closing date on purpose until we get to a certain percentage in each category and then a warning about closing will come. There are prizes (including ice scraper give away at union).

Open-access policy – There is a concern about what this is doing to professional journals and professional organizations.

B. Graduate Council – Dr. Kay Taylor - Indicated the Research 999 proposal has left Student Affairs Committee with drafted proposed wording and moved to committee on planning. It will be open for comment again at grad council. The proposal recommends reducing the dissertation hours from 30. The goal is to make it open enough for each unit to determine the number of 999 hours required in their program. Our position in COE is that we would like more flexibility so that a given program can have a number of research hours determined by the unit. Science and engineering are not required to change anything. They can keep their 30 hours. It is program specific (across and within colleges). Reports from the Graduate School were sent out asking for review and feedback. It was given to the Graduate Council Representative.

C. EGSO - Dr. Burden – The program a couple weeks ago about how to get funding may be viewed on YouTube. The program on Qualtrics Training for survey research is next Wednesday, 11/5 at noon. Dr. Spikes encouraged Dr. Burden to reach out to online, distance students. Dr. Burden said that is why they are using the YouTube (while it isn’t live it can still get the info to the distance students).

D. Continuing Education - Rosemary Boggs is away. (Report sent electronically) There are 83 class sections set up in our college for the Spring 2015 term.

E. Education Council - Trina Harlow - This Friday at 4:15-5:15 there will be a service project at Bergman Elementary School, Purple Power Trunk or Treater. It is a fall festival. Over 100 students signed up to help. November 18, the C2 (Coffee and Council) will meet at 7:00 p.m. We will discuss essential tips for managing student success and Dean Mercer will speak about the COE initiatives.

F. Center for Student and Professional Services - Di Murphy – No report

G. Library - Laura Bonella [email protected] - Quick review of library services. All services are available for distance services using eID, including help services using IM chat. For open access week – we have open access publishing fund. You can apply for funding for up to $3000 until it runs out. Melia Fritch [email protected] – Updating resources – requesting input from us for curriculum materials (Tim Watts or Melia Fritch).
