The Team Discussed the Ideal Freshmen Transition Program, Which Would Include

School Improvement Meeting Thursday, March 11 10am – 12pm, Room 16

Present: Chanda Aves, Beth Davis, Jon Duley, Kim Haveman-Kudlack, Jen Jockheck, Pam Lindemer, Jim Matice, Kim Noga, Eric Simon, Michelle Tachmann, Charlie Warner, Jeremy Winsor

The team discussed the ideal freshmen transition program, which would include:

 Freshmen only lunch

 Limited core teachers (2 per core content area)

 Freshmen course/seminar

 Freshmen Wing and/or Schedule

 Common conference period for freshmen teachers

 Designated meeting time for freshmen teachers (Mondays 2:40-3pm)

The team recommends that CAP become an elective and the reduction in classes be used for the freshmen course. Beth Davis will investigate the possibility of CAP becoming an elective. Also, Pam Lindemer will check with Linda Swinehart or Terry Johnson on the state’s PE requirement. We may be able to gain some flexibility if the requirement is not specifically for the freshmen year.

Many of these components will cost the district little, if any additional funds. The team strongly encourages all stakeholders to implement as many of these components as possible. Full implementation may not be possible, but any effort to move closer to this model will benefit our students.

The team recommends that we send a group to Lakewood to check out their homework room. Kelly Shumway is the contact person at Lakewood. Pam Lindemer will get with Beth Davis and see if it is possible to schedule a visit. Individuals interested in going include: Jon Duley, Jim Matice, Kim Noga, and Jeremy Winsor.

The team recommends that teachers be informed of the possible addition of a freshmen course and solicited for volunteers.
