This Week’s Program

Today Mark Wiser, introduced Martin Ruiz and Michael McGrath from the Chelan- Douglas Community Action Council. Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council was created in 1965 as part of America’s War on Poverty. They are a private not-for-profit corporation serving the residents of both Chelan and Douglas Counties. They assist individuals and families to move out of poverty into a lifestyle that promotes a safer and healthier living environment, which leads to self-sufficiency. The Community Action Council works with other social service agencies, public agencies, community organizations, businesses and churches to coordinate needed service.

The mission of Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council is to connect low- to moderate- income residents to resources which create opportunities to reach and maintain self-sufficiency. Their purpose is to facilitate federal, state, and local resources and engage local communities and businesses in meeting the needs and interests of the economically disadvantaged.

Their goal is to make the entire community more responsive to the needs and interests of the low-income population by mobilizing resources and bringing about greater institutional sensitivity.

The Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council programs include Energy Assistance, Weatherization, Intermountain AmeriCorps, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, the Literacy Council, an asset building program that offers tax preparation and financial education training and the Food Distribution Center that delivers food to twelve area food banks in Chelan & Douglas counties. They also own and operate 50 units of affordable housing and manage the Wenatchee Community Center. WOW, THESE PEOPLE ROCK!!!

3 MEMBERSHIP – NEEDS YOUR HELP Bring a guest/prospective member to Tuesday’s meeting. Our 2016- 17 Goal is to bring our Membership back up to 50 . If we remember to ASK we can make that goal.

Membership Committee Chairman Al Smith, say, “Membership can be Fun”. We need to look at it as another community service project. Every time we bring in a new member to Kiwanis we add strength to our club, which gives us the ability to do more community service projects. So, if you want to have fun, help our club grow just use the magic instructions. “ASK a friend or acquaintance to come to our club for lunch and take a look at what we are doing to improve the quality of life for other, (especially young children)”.

AL SMITH is “THE MAN”, when it comes to Membership. If you have a question about how to bring in a new member just contact Al. His e-mail address is: [email protected] or you can call him at (509) 663-6817. This number is Al’s business number. If he isn’t there his receptionist will take a message so he can call you back. Membership is the LIFE BLOOD of our club for the future of Kiwanis.
