The executive committee wishes to express gratitude to all who assist in making our Provincial Festival happen. Teachers, parents, and accompanists all work together to ensure our young musicians perform to the best of their abilities and have a positive experience.

Thank you, as well, to our generous donors who contribute to provide the awards. We are most grateful to our major sponsor, the Kiwanis Club of Charlottetown. Their interest in and commitment to this organisation is valued and very much appreciated.

Thank you to ALL supporters and volunteers who make our festival the success it is.

Welcome to the Provincial Finals of the 2021 PEI Kiwanis Music Festival!

Congratulations to all of our young performers for being selected by the adjudicator at your local festival to perform at the Provincial Finals. Your hours of practice have resulted in skilled and musical performances. Congratulations also to the dedicated teachers, supportive parents, and wonderful accompanists. Bravo for taking on the extra challenges of recording for Virtual Festivals!

We are grateful to the adjudicators for adapting to our new format and continuing to give positive feedback and helpful advice. We warmly thank our many donors who make the generous awards possible.

We also appreciate all of the volunteers who make the Music Festivals work so well across P.E.I. The local coordinators and their committees give countless hours year-round to keep the festivals going. We especially appreciate the work of our Provincial Administrator, Lynda Sharpe, who not only organizes our Provincial Finals, but also contributes hours of her time and wisdom to represent PEI at the Federation of National Music Festivals meetings. It is through Lynda’s persistence and encouragement that the four local festivals took on the task of learning how to operate Virtual Festivals.

Best wishes to our performers!

Sir William (Bill) Hughes was born in Holywood, Northern Ireland. He was the principal flute and piccolo player with the band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines for nine years, during which time he performed solos for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other heads of state at many official functions, as well as at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

He performed as a freelance flautist throughout Britain and Europe and with many of the top orchestras in London (B.B.C., London Symphony) as well as doing recordings for television and radio. He has performed for H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Michael of Kent, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Princess Margaret, King of Norway, President Reagan and other Heads of State.

In 1982 he became Captain and Principal Director of Music for the 48th Highlanders of Canada. In 2018, Sir William retired after 20 years as the Director of Music for the 200-piece Burlington Teen Tour Band – Canada’s largest and most award winning Youth Band.

A frequent adjudicator and clinician, Bill has judged throughout North America and at the World Championships for Marching Bands (, Germany, Japan). Bill is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Arts Council, Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and currently sits on the Music Advisory Committee for Mohawk College.

Thomas Davidson is a graduate of Queen’s University, The Royal College of Music in London, England, and McGill University. Hailed for his "impressive command of the instrument", he is a frequent performer as soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician both in Canada and abroad, and also on CBC radio.

Davidson has been responsible for the commissioning and première performances of many contemporary Canadian works— including both solo piano and chamber music repertoire. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Trio Chanteclair (soprano, clarinet and piano) and has enjoyed musical collaboration with many composers and fellow chamber musicians.

Associate Professor in the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University, where he has been teaching piano and musicianship since 1984, Tom also serves as a coordinator for the Performance and Keyboard areas. He also taught at McGill’s Schulich School of Music for over 30 years and took on a number of administrative responsibilities there, including the position of Chair of Musicianship Studies. While teaching piano at McGill, he taught a significant number of piano students at the McGill Conservatory of Music and Marianopolis College (CEGEP) in Montréal.

Davidson has been an executive committee member of the Quebec Music Teachers’ Association and President of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association. He is the Québec Provincial Administrator and Board of Governors member for the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals and is in demand as a workshop animator, examiner/jury member and adjudicator across Canada and in the United States.

Marion Abbott is a proud graduate of the Musical Theatre Performance Program at Sheridan College. Upon graduating, she was immediately hired to teach for the program and was later named one of the top twenty graduates of the program. She has her Grade 10 Voice and A.R.C.T. in Piano Performance from The Royal Conservatory of Music. Marion produced over 400 productions in and other cities. Of the many (many!) shows Marion has worked on, some of her favourites include The Scarlet Pimpernel, All Shook Up, Anne And Maud, No Safe Harbour, Ragtime, Streetcar Named Desire and Passion. As a private teacher, Marion has taught voice, piano and acting for over 30 years to students of all ages. From festivals to recitals to performing in Disney World, Marion cherishes her memories of her time with her students dearly. Many of her former students now work in the arts full time. Marion is now in demand as a director-music director, consultant, adjudicator and private coach. She has also uploaded over 600 accompaniment tracks on her YouTube Channel for Singers and Voice Teachers to utilize: www.youtube.com/c/MarionAbbott/Videos. Marion has also created Endless Song Suggestions - a database on her website for singers and voice teachers to find the 'perfect song'. Marion LOVES Walt Disney and tries to get to Walt Disney World in Florida at least once a year. Her favourite rides are Splash Mountain and the Tower of Terror. Marion is married to visual artist Giancarlo Piccin and they have a son, also named Giancarlo. The three of them are addicted to movies. www.marionabbott.com
