The core curriculum of the class will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Essay Writing You will be writing at least three essays. These assignments will be the most important aspect of the course. #1: College Application Essay #2: Argumentation Essay #3: Definition or Comparison/Contrast Essay

Vocabulary The class will include a vocabulary program featuring five words per week, a ten word quiz every other week, and a comprehensive eighty word quiz at the end of the semester.

Sentence Fluency A conscientious effort will be made to help you become a more fluent, sophisticated writer. Key techniques will include sentence combining and sentence expanding strategies.

Logic You will learn to become a better thinker and arguer. You will learn to analyze arguments in order to establish their validity. You will learn how to protect yourself from those who might intentionally trick you into accepting their point of view.

Grammar Good grammar is an essential element of good writing. Hopefully, you will discover that grammar is not necessarily synonymous with boredom!

SAT Test Preparation Many of you consider yourselves to be college bound students. However, to get into a four year college you will need a solid SAT score. Several aspects of this course that are intentionally designed to help you get the SAT test score you desire are discussed below.

*Grammar lessons taught in this class will mirror ten areas regularly emphasized on the SAT.

*We will be taking several SAT practice tests. These tests use the same format that you will see on the actual SAT.

*This course's vocabulary program will be helpful because vocabulary is one of the SAT's areas of emphasis.

*The SAT includes timed extended responses. Obviously the three essays we are writing will help you prepare for this part of the test.

Importantly, this class is still relevant to you even if you never plan on attending college or taking an SAT test. Becoming a good writer transcends any desire to do well on an SAT test! Good writing is good thinking, and good thinking is something we should all aspire to master every day.
