Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer’s Report was distributed and reviewed by Rhonda Pilck. The checkbook balance as of August 3, 2005 was $483.02. We received a donation of $200 from the Order of the Eagles Lodge #386. The report was accepted and approved on a motion from Art Clemenson and seconded by Kim Reynolds.
Vice President Election: No takers during meeting, however after the meeting, Jean Stevens agreed to again take on the Vice President position. Action/approval on this issue will be taken at the next YC meeting.
SMARTT Program Updates: The program at Deerasic Park will wrap-up in two weeks with a canoeing and a party. Looking at starting a program where high school and grade school students work together, and also looking at starting a middle school age girl’s program in October.
July Event Update – Teen Pool Party: Successful event. There were approximately 200 teens at the pool. They were very well behaved. Kids got $2 food coupons for the concession, and there were a number of door prizes given away from Zane State and K-Mart gift cards. City Pool was very cooperative and generous with us.
August Event Planning: A Family Pool Party will be held at the City Pool on Friday, August 12. It will be sponsored by the Youth Commission, Guernsey Co. Child Support Enforcement Agency, and the Cambridge City Park Dept. CSEA will supply door prizes, and there will also be a DJ. There will be no cost for this event. Youth Leadership Project: Mike Kachilla addressed the group to explain how the Youth Leadership Program works. There are 20 students in the class, all juniors in high school (5 from Cambridge, 5 from Meadowbrook, 5 from Buckeye Trail, and 5 from John Glenn) where they learn a variety of leadership skills, one of which will stress organizational skills. It is hoped that the class, which begins in October, will be able to assist the Youth Commission with an event, possibly next March or April that the class can take on as a project. The focus will be on a core value (honesty & integrity) and the target audience will be elementary school kids. The challenge will be that this is a countywide event (each student can take it back to their respective school district) and there will be limited to no funds. Mike suggested having representatives coming to a Leadership meeting in November to talk to the students and brainstorm. More information to come.
Other Business: Magical Moments of Childhood Program again hosing their Back to School in Style Project, which includes backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and clothes for area children in need. This year it will be held on Aug. 15 & 22 at area apartment complexes. The Youth Commission will again donate $200 to the project for the purchase of backpacks. This action was approved on a motion from Jean Stevens and seconded by Tut Turner.
Magical Moments of Childhood will also be holding their second annual Golf Scramble at Wildfire Golf Course on Sept. 24. This is used as a fundraiser for the group. For more details and fees, call Kim Reynolds at 439-3945.
Jill Lukac gave a brief presentation about a program that she is putting together through the Juvenile Court called J.E.T (Jobs and Education for Teens). The program deals with Steps for Success, Mentors, and Education. It will work with at-risk kids age 15-17.
