LOCATION: Superior Court of New Jersey ANNOUNCEMENT: #08-09 Passaic Vicinage – Operations Divisions Interpreting Unit

POSITION DESCRIPTION The Passaic Vicinage is seeking individuals who, under the general direction of the Operations Division Manager or other supervisory personnel, will interpret between English and Spanish in the sight, consecutive and simultaneous modes in court proceedings and other court-related events, either in person or via a telecommunication device; produce translations; collect information (e.g. specialized vocabulary) on cases to prepare for the communicative event, and perform other related work as required.

POSITIONS WILL BE FILLED AT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING LEVELS BASED ON CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND AVAILABLE POSITIONS.

Court Interpreter 2 – Master $61,221.20-$92,409.35* Level 3 – Master Employees at this level interpret complex legal proceedings and translate forms, letters and other court-related documents.

Court Interpreter 1 – Journey $57,755.85-$82,013.31* Level 2 – Journey Employees at this level interpret legal proceedings and translate forms, letters and other court-related documents.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS – SPOKEN LANGUAGE TESTING: All applicants must demonstrate a language and skill proficiency consistent with the level of the position based on the performance tests administered by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts or an equivalent test by a member of the Consortium for State Court Interpreter Certification; or possess the Court Interpreter Certification from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. NOTE: For additional information on becoming a Court Interpreter refer to www.judiciary.state.nj.us/interpreters/intro.htm LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. AUTHORIZATION TO WORK: US Citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. SPECIAL NOTE: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting. **For current Judiciary employees, salary upon promotion or advancement will be an increase of 5% of base salary or the minimum salary of the band/level, whichever is greater. Employees who are hired directly from another branch of New Jersey state government may be hired up to 5% above the salary they were being paid in the other branch of government. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range or up to 15% above the minimum salary based on education and experience; however, a higher salary may be approved based upon the particular qualifications of the selected candidate or the difficulty of the recruitment. In no case may the employee be paid more than the maximum salary for the title.

Employees are entitled to a minimum of one paid vacation day and one sick day for each month worked during the first calendar year. Additionally, employees earn three administrative leave days and receive thirteen paid holidays per year.
