POSITION SUMMARY PURPOSE: Performs selected dental and clerical duties that assist in patient care management; these duties are delegated in relation to the degree of training and in accordance with the objectives and policies of the organization and respective state laws governing such action and activities. Under direct supervision demonstrates skill in the performance of dental procedures and use of dental equipment. Must function adequately in the clerical area to support registration, scheduling, and billing functions.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires standing for long periods of time. Working in dental environment. Some bending and stretching required. Working under stress. Exposure to bodily fluids.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal dental office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

1. Assists dentist & hygienist during examination and treatment of patients.

2. Prepares patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instruments trays, prepares materials, and assist dentist & hygienist during dental procedures.

3. Takes and record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients. JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: DENTAL ASSISTANT PAGE 2

4. Expose dental diagnostic x-rays.

5. Pours, trims, and polishes study casts, fabricates customer impressions trays from preliminary impressions, cleans and polishes removable appliances, and fabricates temporary restorations.

6. Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.

7. Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.

8. Provides postoperative instructions prescribed by dentist.

9. Record treatment information in patient records.

10. Greet patients as they arrive, verify records, direct patients to appropriate areas, and answer telephone calls.

11. Schedule appointments, prepares bills, and receives payment for dental services, completes insurance forms, and maintains clerical records, manually or using computer.

12. Prepares exam rooms with equipment and supplies as needed for examination procedures; cleans and restocks examining rooms as necessary.

13. Attends and participates in Health Center conferences and meetings as requested.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or GED and completion of an accredited Dental Assistant Program are required.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

Minimum of one-year dental assistant experience in a dental office with x-ray and lab contacts. JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: DENTAL ASSISTANT PAGE 3
