PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE AMONG TEENS: What local police departments and a local prevention organization are doing. Kenton County Alliance kicks off the Drug Disposal campaign on March 1, 2010, 1:00 p.m. at Erlanger Police Department.

Erlanger, KY, 2/22/10 - Local police departments are partnering with Kenton County Alliance, a substance abuse prevention coalition, to rid Kenton County homes of unused, unwanted and outdated prescription drugs. The Drug Disposal Program, beginning on March 1, 2010 will provide drop off boxes in the lobbies of Erlanger Police Department and Kenton County Police Department in Independence. Citizens may put unused prescription drugs in the box anonymously during lobby hours at the police station. Police evidence departments and the Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force will be collecting the drugs from the drop boxes and destroying them by incineration.

Teenagers are using prescription drugs to get high. The drugs are available in their own homes and are FREE. According to SAMHSA, The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 70% of teens who use prescription drugs illicitly obtain the drugs from friends and relatives. This program will reduce the drugs available to our youth and raise awareness to the problem. It will also reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals entering our water supply.

Prescription drug take-back and disposal programs like this are being done all over the country however; this may be the first to bring so many agencies into the plan. Our program was modeled after a program in Utah. These programs require DEA approval and drugs must be collected and destroyed by law enforcement officers. The county has 14 police departments. More collection boxes are planned for later this year.

The biggest obstacle faced by police departments in placing these boxes has been funding to buy the boxes which are $700.00 each. Businesses and private citizens have stepped forward to fund these two boxes. Kenton County Alliance will continue to look for funding for additional collection boxes. Additional information may be obtained from Kathy Nafus, 859-760-2051.

ACT for Juniors All juniors will take the ACT test on Tuesday, March 9, paid for by the state. Along with you, we want them to get the most from this opportunity. Being able to take the ACT on a school day means they are saving not only an early wake-up on a Saturday morning, but also the test fee ($32). Since these test results may be used for college admission, ACT has some strict procedures that must be followed.  On Tuesday, March 2, the juniors will complete preliminary information for the test. They will be able to select up to four colleges to receive their test results, so we encourage you to discuss their choices before March 2. This includes 4-year colleges as well as technical/community colleges.  ACT prohibits any type of electronic devices in the testing rooms. Students must leave cell phones, I-pods, etc., at home or in their cars or lockers on March 9. ACT's policy states that if a student is seen with an electronic device during the test or even the break, we are to dismiss them and their score sheet will be voided.  ACT requires us to ID the students, so please encourage them to bring their drivers' licenses, school ID's, or passports on March 9. If they don't have one of these school or government-issued photo ID's, have them see their counselor by March 6.  Students are encouraged to use a calculator on the math test, but a few types are prohibited. They can ask their math teachers for information about the prohibited ones.  If a student is absent on March 9, they may make up the ACT on March 23. If they are absent on both dates, they will have lost their chance to take the test on a school day. We appreciate your assistance in helping the juniors do their best on the ACT. If you have any questions, please contact your child's counselor. ON OUR WEBPAGE: Senior Bulletin The COLONEL Student Newspaper Weather Information
