Summary Report of the 35th meeting of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC17/WG8, held in Sun City, Republic of South Africa, 2005-09-27/30 (Revision 1)

The meeting was hosted by South African Bureau of Standards and held at the Sun City Conference Centre, Republic of South Africa. It was chaired by the WG8 Convener Michael Hegenbarth, Germany.

The following 26 participants from 11 countries and 1 Liaison Organization attended the meeting:

35.01 AFI registration related to ISO/IEC 15693

WG8 accepts the recommendations as from N 1123. Regarding the registration administrations for AFI codings related to ISO/IEC 15693 WG8 welcomes and accepts the offer from SC31 to use their infrastructure for that registration, relevant for the values ‘D’ to ‘F’. The responsibility for assigning those codings, however, remains with SC17 (assisted by WG8).

35.02 Revision of ISO/IEC 15693

WG8 accepts the offer from the TF3 Convener Mr Chris Stanford to propose revised versions of all three parts of ISO/IEC 15693 no later than at the next WG8 meeting in April 2006.

35.03 Taskforce 4 of WG8 (TF4)

WG8 accepts the report from TF4 as in document N 1159. WG8 appoints Mr Francis Christian as the Convener of TF4, Mr Chris Stanford as the Secretary of TF4 and Mr Colin Tanner as the Project Editor.

35.04 Balloting of the FDISs of ISO/IEC 10373-6/Amendment 1, ISO/IEC 10373- 6/Amendment 3, ISO/IEC 10373-6/Amendment 4 and ISO/IEC 10373-6/Amendment 5

WG8 decides to instruct the WG8 Secretariat to distribute the new texts of ISO/IEC 10373- 6/Amendment 1, ISO/IEC 10373-6/Amendment 3, ISO/IEC 10373-6/Amendment 4 and ISO/IEC 10373-6/Amendment 5 by no later than on 31st of October, as laid down in the documents N 1155, N 1156, N 1157 and N 1158, to the WG8 members having participated in the Sun City meeting for a three-week review period from the day of distribution on. This period is intended to sort out any remaining editorial comments. After that period the Project Editors of those four Amendments are instructed to forward them together with their disposition of FCD comments documents N 1151, N 1152, N 1153 and N 1154 to the SC17 Secretariat for FDIS ballot by no later than the end of November 2005.

35.05 Defect report related to ISO/IEC 14443-3/Amendment 1

WG8 instructs Mr Wolfgang Meindl to draft a defect report related to ISO/IEC 14443-3/AMD1 on the basis of N 1165. That draft will be distributed within the WG8 members no later than end of October 2005 for a 3-week commenting period. After that period the WG8 Secretariat is instructed to forward it to the SC17 Secretariat for balloting.

35.06 Multiple chips and antennas in ePassports (MCAP)

WG8 instructs the WG8 Convener to consolidate the draft text for an NP on MCAP, as provided by N 1162 R1, with WG3 at its next meeting and then to forward the possibly new version of the NP to the SC17 Secretariat for balloting by no later than the end of October 2005. Once the NP is accepted, the associated development of the MCAP standardization will be assigned to TF2.

35.07 Revision of ISO/IEC 14443-1 WG8 instructs the WG8 Convener to forward the revised version of ISO/IEC 14443-1 to SC17 for approval on its balloting as CD.

35.08 Project Editors for the revisions of ISO/IEC 14443-3, 14443-4

WG8 appoints Mr. Reinhard Meindl (Austria) and Mr. Wolfgang Meindl (Germany) as the Project Editors taking the task of revising the Standards ISO/IEC 14443-3 and 14443-4.

35.09 Commemoration to Mr. Alain Berthon

WG8 has learnt from the tragic event that its member Mr. Alain Berthon had passed away in summer 2005 after a several-month illness. His contribution to the development of ISO/IEC 15693, in particular its part 3, for which he had been the Project Editor, was of great significance. Alain was an expert recognized in the RFID industry as a person of stature, intellect and vision. His contributions to WG8 and to several other groups will be greatly missed. The intensive memory of Alain will remain forever in our hearts.

35.10 Next meetings and venues

35.11 Host Appreciation

WG8 expresses its appreciation to the National Body of the Republic of South Africa (SABS) for inviting WG8 to Sun City and to STANSA 71J (Cards and personal identification) for organizing the meetings.

35.12 Sponsor Appreciation

WG8 expresses its appreciation to the following organizations for sponsoring the meetings and the welcome reception on 26 September 2005. The meeting facilities, the meeting venue, the delegate gifts and the social event were wonderful and very much appreciated and the delegates welcomed the opportunity to visit South Africa.

Their outstanding planning, organization and attention to detail as well as the support provided to the delegates both before and during the meeting were instrumental in making the meetings so successful and were very much appreciated.
