Florence Unified School District #1 May, 2012 Board Report Mark Lamas, Director of Transportation and Support Services

Transportation Highlights

The Poston Butte transportation facility was the scene for a “Senior Prank” which involved the flattening of tires on 26 busses. District mechanics, Roberts Tire and other outside vendors assisted in airing up the tires and getting busses back on route. This affected every school with the exception of FK8. In the meantime, the Florence and Anthem bus drivers picked up the slack, ran routes and transported students to their home schools. Vans continued throughout the morning, going over routes to ensure that every student had been collected and bought to school.

There was one minor accident to report the very last day of the school year. Bus 62 came in contact with a vehicle at the corner of Bella Vista and Hunt Highway while trying to make a left hand turn. There were 27 students on board. No injuries were reported and each student was checked and released by EMT personnel on scene before they were either released to parent/guardian at the scene or transported home by additional busses provided. Bus Driver was also transported to local medical facility for drug testing which is a CDL requirement. Reports were completed the following day and submitted to district insurance carrier.

Information for Summer School Transportation information for all bus riders for Summer School, ESY and CAVIT/COSMO was finalized on Wednesday, May 31, 2012. However there were some schools adding students as late as Thursday morning. All bus riders were provided with their bus route information on Thursday morning.

New Equipment We now have a Grove Articulated Man lift in our equipment inventory. The Man lift was acquired from Pinal County Fleet Services at no cost to the District. There will be minimal cost for repairs.

A Transmission Jack was donated to the School District. The jack has an estimated value of $900+ if purchased new. There is also a small cost in repairing the jack.

Poston Butte Bus Barn The acquisition and placement of equipment is coming along nicely. A new air compressor, tire machine, two work benches and some hand tools have been received. Installation of the air compressor and related air lines is an on-going project with anticipated completion date of the end of June.

Mileage Reimbursement Program We will be mailing the Mileage Reimbursement Claim form to our eligible families in our district to obtain their signature to process their mileage reimbursement. After signed claim forms are received, we will begin calculating mileage then submit to Accounts Payable for check processing.

Transportation provided shuttle service for administration to and from the graduation site to vehicles to provided additional parking for the families of graduating students.

Work Orders Our maintenance team completed 512 work orders for the month. Good Job!

Summer Custodial Work Our custodial staff and maintenance crew will be walking through the schools to identify walls, ceilings and floors that may require special attention. Crews will be working through the summer to prepare our schools for the return of students and staff. Student desks, ceilings and floors will be carefully cleaned and polished for the start of our new year.

Grounds/Maintenance Our grounds crew have been extremely busy this month! Both of our High School Football fields were carefully prepared for Graduation Exercise. Special attention was given to Poston Butte set-up as this was their first gradation exercise and Grounds, Maintenance, and Custodial crews worked hard to ensure everything from chairs to sound systems were clean and in proper working condition. Special Thanks to the IT Team for assisting in the set-up of the sound system for this special event.

Crews then quickly disassembled Poston Butte graduation setup and moved over Wednesday night and early Thursday morning to Florence High School Football field to set up for their graduation exercise Thursday night. It has been reported that both schools had a very successful graduation program. Kudos to Support Services for a job(s) WELL DONE!!

Challenges Summer Heat! Fortunately the month of May was rather cool. There were only three or four days that the busses were allowed to idle as temperatures soared above 100 degrees. There were no major repairs due to overheating. As always, the summer heat always challenges our busses.
