The 2nd South West Solution Focused Conference ‘Solution Focused Developments, Past, Present and Future’
Thursday 6th February 2014 9.30am – 4.30 pm at Devonport Guildhall, Ker Street, Plymouth
Zebra Collective and Plymouth Options are pleased to announce the second South West Solution Focused Conference, this time at the stunning and recently regenerated 1820s ‘Regency’ Guildhall of the old town of Devonport . www.devonportguildhall.org The keynote will be struck by Dr Alasdair Macdonald, Consultant Psychiatrist and former president of the European Brief Therapy Association, who will talk on the development and changes in the model from its origins to the present day, with some consideration of future directions. The later morning and afternoon will then offer a choice of workshops run by current practitioners from a variety of backgrounds including education, mental health, speech and language therapy, learning disabilities and community work. Workshops will have a practical emphasis, drawing on these practitioners’ current thinking and practice. Workshops available on the day:
1) SFBT: Toward the Unexpected
Presented by Emer Scanlon and Marianne Bos-Clark, Speech and Language Therapists CONTENT OF WORKSHOP:
This workshop will consider how training in SFBT has enriched Emer and Marianne’s work and will reflect on how training in SFBT has brought unexpected change and benefits. 2) Working with Young People and their Families (applying SFBT to a CAMHS setting)
Presented by Chris Glew
This workshop will consider how Chris uses SFBT to address the concerns of young people and their families. Working with the CAPA model, using established guidelines like Goal Based Outcomes and measuring recovery.
3) Solution Focused Coaching Intervention for Schools
Presented by Matt Jones, Behavioural support advisory teacher, and Catherine Dunnett, Educational Psychologist
This workshop will explore a solution focused coaching intervention approach for teachers, teaching assistants and leadership groups, specifically designed to raise the quality of teaching and learning. The intervention was developed in Devon by Educational Psychologists and Behaviour Support Advisory teachers interested in a different approach to supporting whole school and individual teacher development.
4) How ‘not’ to do Solution Focused Therapy with people with cognitive and communication challenges
Presented by Paul Kimber, Systemic Practitioner in Learning Disability
This workshop will try to draw out the lessons gained as Paul puts it ‘…from mistakes made whilst trying to apply the Solution focused model’, within the field of learning disability.
5) "It ain’t what you do it's the way that you do it, that's what gets results." Using solution focused practice in research and service evaluation projects
Presented by Sarah Perry, Clinical Psychologist and work for Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust as well as independently
This workshop will consider how research and service evaluation projects can be grounded in solution focused practice, from identifying research questions, developing and selecting outcome measures, engaging with teams to embed evaluation into practice, service-user participation, analysing results and sharing findings with others.
6) Video Interaction Guidance; Introduction to an accredited intervention to improve effective communication, oozing with solution focused thinking.
Presented by Zoe Stephens, Educational Psychologist (Early Years Inclusion Service)
This workshop will introduce VIG as a supportive approach to difficult and worrying home situations where behaviour and attachment might be a challenge, unpacking successful communication and working positively with clients through use of video, even with the most deep rooted habits can help change and rebuild relationships.
7) Bringing Solution Focused ideas into all aspects of a service
Presented by Alyssa Page and Judith Bayley (Senior SENCO’s)
This workshop will share a team’s solution focused journey over the past 7 years, how solution focused ways of working have been gradually integrated into all elements of the team’s work, from meetings, supervision, reports, evaluations and ways of measuring impact of work and outcomes. The workshop will also provide delegates with an opportunity to reflect on their own areas for development through skills practice. Other workshops with details to follow:
8) Solution Focused Practice in a Children’s Primary Mental Health Service
Presented by Beth Flynn and Karen O’Neill (Children’s Primary Mental Health Workers)
This workshop will outline how the Children’s Primary Mental Health Service in Cornwall has developed Solution Focused practice in providing training and consultation to professionals, and in direct early intervention work with children, young people and families. We will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using a Solution Focused approach while working in multi-agency settings with professionals trained in a number of different models.
9) Using Solution Focused ideas with survivors of rape and sexual assault.
