School Improvement Action Plan Garrison Elementary Goal #1: Garrison Elementary students in grades 3-6 will improve student writing process and application scores by 6% each year as measured by ISTEP+.

Support Data (from the profile): Standardized Assessments: Local Assessment:  Lowest essential skill in  ISTEP + in grades 3, 4, 5, & 6 -Trimester writing prompt assessment standardized testing in grades 3 -6.  Acuity -Day-to-day assessment to monitor this skill  General consensus among the staff  F & P reading benchmark that this is among the lowest assessment Persons Responsible for Data Collection: academic skills of Garrison students  PPVT Literacy Coaches, classroom teachers, according to informal interviews  DIBELS Principal- Mrs. Kelly Andrews conducted by the goals team.

Interventions: Students will become more proficient in writing applications through a variety of new learning experiences that the Garrison staff will create through Literacy Collaborative.  Emergent Writers are those children who know that symbols on a page convey a message, yet have not grasped how to use the letters and symbols to make a message.  Early Writers are those children who have learned to make important connections with letters, sounds, and words.  Developing Writers are children who can elaborate on a piece of writing using a combination of high-frequency spelling and phonetic spellings. They can generate ideas, but may lack structure.  Fluent Writers are students whose writing is characterized by clearly organized and well-crafted pieces that use figurative language and paint pictures in the reader’s mind.

At the end of a Garrison K-6th experience, each student will have been instructed with a spiral curriculum of 6+1 Traits in Writing.
