JOB DESCRIPTION:
To ensure the safety of both citizens and animals with knowledge and enforcement of rabies control, animal welfare, shelter operation and citizen welfare in regard to animal control.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Patrols streets to locate stray animals, promptly captures animals, and transports them to an animal shelter.
Responds to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of federal, state and local animal control ordinances and laws, including but not limited to, animals running at large, animal bites, and nuisance animals.
Removes stray injured or dangerous animals from both public and private property.
Investigates violations of animal control ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required; appears in court to testify regarding animal control cases.
Serves various criminal or civil notices or papers related to enforcement of federal, state and local laws and animal control ordinances.
Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance as well as responding to after hour emergency calls.
Maintains availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent. Bellmead Police Dept. Animal Control Officer Created: January 2012
Carries out duties in compliance with federal, state, local laws and ordinances.
Maintains contact with police and fire personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provides mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about Department activities.
Logs all calls and handles inquiries from the public pertaining to animal ownership and ordinances.
Attends meetings that involve police mission strategies and intelligence sharing of a sensitive nature.
Accesses secured police facilities.
Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.
Cares for, feeds and houses animals at the animal shelter.
Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent is required; and,
Six (6) months of experience with animals is desirable but not required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Employee must have a valid Texas Driver's License by date of hire.
Must have pre-rabies exposure series with a positive result.
Must obtain Texas Department of Health Basic certification within one year of employment and maintain required Continuing Education Credits.
When requested, must have or be able to obtain state euthanasia certification within 120 days of employment date.
Additional job related tests may be required by the City.
Employee must undergo a security clearance, background check and polygraph (when requested) testing. Bellmead Police Dept. Animal Control Officer Created: January 2012
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Patrol vehicle, animal restraint and capture equipment, radio, euthanasia devices (when required), and first aid equipment; also appropriate safety equipment as necessary.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
The employee is constantly exposed to animals, some of which can be vicious. The employee is also exposed to chemicals related to the euthanasia process, as well as chemicals used in disinfecting facilities.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
