FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY CARE HES 240-005 (1 CREDIT) and HES 240-L05 (1 CREDIT) Spring Semester 2008 Tues 10:00–10:50am and Thurs 10:00–11:40am

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student will: 1. Know the signs and symptoms of an injured/ill person and evaluate their first aid/CPR need orally and/or on a written examination. 2. Demonstrate skills necessary to provide immediate care to a person who is injured/ill on practical/written examinations. 3. Know and complete the requirements for certification in First Aid and CPR.

COURSE INFORMATION Attendance: Class will start promptly. If students are tardy, they must check in at the end of class to avoid being marked absent. Each absence for any reason will result in a deduction of 5 points from the 150 attendance points. The only exception will be university-excused absences. Each absence beyond three will dramatically affect your grade for this course. See below table:

The instructor reserves the right not to certify individuals in a particular area if too much instruction time is missed for that topic. Certification is at the discretion of the instructor.

Equipment: Students are expected to treat all mannequins and first aid equipment carefully. Face shields and disposable gloves are provided for your and other students’ safety. Please use these at all times. You will clean and store the equipment prior to leaving class each session.

Classroom Rules: The following rules must be adhered to in order to provide a safe and effective teaching and learning environment. 1. No bicycles, skateboards, or rollerblades are allowed in any building. Secure your bicycle in the racks provided outside the buildings. 2. Cellular phones must be turned off during class. EVALUATION METHOD: Each student’s grade will be determined according to the following distribution of points and grading scale. Grading will be traditional. CPR Practical Exam 50 pts A 90-100% 405-450 CPR Written Exam 50 pts B 80-89.99% 360-404 First Aid Presentation 100 pts C 70-79.99% 315-359 First Aid Practical Exam 50 pts D 60-69.99% 270-314 First Aid Written Exam 50 pts F <60% <270 Attendance/Participation 150 pts TOTAL 450 pts

CPR Practical Exam: Students will perform CPR and be evaluated on proper technique and action in assisting the “victim”. CPR Written Exam: The exam is written by the American Red Cross. An 80% or higher is required on each portion in order to be eligible for certification. First Aid Presentation: In groups, students will present first aid material to the class. A separate rubric for the specific requirements of the presentations will be distributed. First Aid Practical Exam: Students will administer first aid and be evaluated on proper technique and action in assisting the “victim”. Students may also be asked to verbally respond to scenarios. First Aid Written Exam: The exam is written by the American Red Cross. An 80% or higher is required on each portion in order to be eligible for certification. Attendance/Participation: If a student arrives late, leaves before class is dismissed, or does not participate in class, the instructor reserves the right to deduct participation points for that class session.

Any questions or concerns regarding the course should be brought to the attention of the instructor. Students in need of special consideration for a disability should notify the instructor as soon as possible. The University policies regarding Academic Dishonesty will be followed for all assignments and exams.

Week Eight (3/11, 3/13): FA: Overview, Bleeding and Shock, Group Assignments, Class time to work in groups SPRING BREAK!! 3/15 – 3/24

Week Nine (3/25, 3/27): First aid presentations begin. FA: Soft Tissue Injuries, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Head Neck and Back Injuries Week Ten (4/1, 4/3): FA: Chest, Abdomen, & Pelvis Injuries, Injuries to Extremities, Splinting Practice

Week Eleven (4/8, 4/10): FA: Sudden Illness, Bites and Stings & Poisoning, Substance Misuse and Abuse Week Twelve (4/15, 4/17): FA: Heat & Cold Emergencies, Water Emergencies, Delayed Help Situations Week Thirteen (4/22, 4/24): People with Special Needs, Review for Practical Exams, Practice Scenarios

Week Fourteen (4/29, 5/1): FA Practical Exams Week Fifteen: (5/6, 5/8): FA: Review for written exam, Written exam Week Sixteen (5/12 – 5/16): FINALS WEEK = NO CLASSES!
