POLITICO PRO TRANSPORTATION: FAA safety head to retire
Peggy Gilligan, the FAA's associate administrator for aviation safety, told top FAA brass this morning that she is retiring.
"I have had the great good fortune to be a part of the FAA and the Aviation Safety organization during some of the most challenging — and most successful — times," Gilligan wrote in an internal email obtained by POLITICO.
"I am proud to have been a part of the safest time in this community and will watch closely as all of you build on the legacy we inherited from those who came before us. Thank you for letting me lead this outstanding organization and thank you for all you do for aviation safety every day."
Gilligan has served in her current role since 2009, though she has been with the FAA in one capacity or another since 1980.
She will retire effective March 31.

POLITICO PRO TRANSPORTATION: Larsen: House plans five FAA hearings starting soon
The House Transportation Committee is planning five hearings on reauthorizing the FAA, Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) said this evening.
Larsen, the Aviation subcommittee's top Democrat, said the hearings have not been scheduled yet but will probably start "next month at the earliest." He said the hearings would address each major section of the bill, including "funding, certification, drones and air traffic control privatization."
Larsen also said that he expected the conversation around separating the air traffic control system from the FAA to proceed more or less as it did last year.
"I don't personally believe the House politics have changed at all on ATC privatization," he said, noting that while the plan had significant support on T&I, there was opposition from House tax writers and appropriators.
