Authenticity of the Bible

Quran refers to the Bible as “Torah, Zabour, and Injil” and “Zikr” or the Reminder

15:9 “We have, without doubt, sent down the Reminder, and We preserve it.”

6:34 “No man can change the words of Allah.”

16:43,44 “We sent not any before you (O Muhammad), except men to whom We revealed. Ask the people of the Reminder if you do not know – 44 with the clear signs and the Psalms; and We have sent down to you the Reminder that you may make clear to mankind what was sent down to them, that they may give thought.” (The Reminder is also the Bible. See Sura 21:7, 48, 105).

29:46 “Argue not with the People of the Book save in the fairer manner, except for those of them that do wrong; and say to them, “We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you; our God and Your God is One, and to Him we have surrendered.”

10:94 “If you are in doubt regarding what We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Book before you. The truth has come to you from your Lord,

ISI NC2014 Workshop: Reaching Muslim Students June 2014 therefore do not doubt it.

5:43 “How come they (the Jews) come to you for judgment when they have their own law (Torah) wherein Allah delivered judgment? Even after that, they turn away. They are not (truly) people of faith.

5:44 Indeed, We did reveal the Torah wherein is a guidance and a light, by which the prophets who surrendered (to Allah) judged the Jews, and the rabbis and the priests (judged) by such of Allah’s Scripture as they were bidden to observe. . .

5:46 And in their footsteps We sent Jesus son of Mary, confirming that which was (revealed) before him, and We bestowed on him the Gospel wherein is guidance and a light, confirming that which was (revealed) before it in the Torah – a guidance and an admonition to the God-fearing.

5:47 Let the People of the Gospel judge by that which Allah revealed therein. Whoever judges not by that which Allah had revealed; such are the corrupt. 48 And to you (O Muhammad) We have revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah has revealed. . .

Abrogation, only in the Quran

Two verses about Abrogation in the Quran. Quran abrogates Quran:

2:106 “If We abrogate any verse or cause it to be forgotten, We replace it by a better or a similar one. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?”

22:52 “We never sent a messenger or prophet before you, but that Satan cast into his fancy, when he was fancying. But Allah abrogates what Satan casts. Then Allah confirms His signs (revelations), and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

The Quran has four contradictory verses about Wine: 16:67 “And of the fruits of the date-palm and grapes from which you derive strong drink and good nourishment. Surely in this there is a sign for a people who use their intelligence.” 2:219 “They ask you about drinking and gambling. Say: “There is great harm in both, although there is some benefit for men, but their sin is greater than their benefit.” 4:43 “O you who believe! Do not approach prayers when you are drunk, until you know what you say.” 5:90 “O you who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, and (occult dedication of) stones and divining arrows are only an infamy of Satan’s handiwork. Leave them aside in order that you may succeed.”

The Quran has three contradictory verses about the Qibla:

ISI NC2014 Workshop: Reaching Muslim Students June 2014 2:125 “And we made the House (the Ka’ba) a place of assembly for mankind and a place of safety, (saying): “Adopt the place where Abraham stood, as a place of worship.”

2:142 “The foolish among the people will ask: “What has made them change their Qibla?” Say: “To Allah belongs the east and the west.”

2:144 (O Muhammad!) “We have seen you turn your face towards heaven. We will surely turn you towards a Qibla that will please you. Turn towards the Inviolable Sanctuary (in Mecca); and wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it.”

The Quran has two contradictory verses about the true religion:

5:69 “Those who believe (in the Quran), and those who are Jews, and Sabaeans, and Christians, whoso believes in Allah and the last Day and does right, no fear come upon them, neither shall they grieve.”

3:85 “He who seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted from him, and he will be a loser in the Hereafter.” Jesus in the Quran

The Quran’s story of the birth of Jesus (Suras 3,19)

Mary was chosen above all women

Dedicated as a child: 3:35-37 35 “When the wife of Imran (Mary’s mother) said, “My Lord, I have vowed to You, in dedication, that which is in my womb. Accept it from me. You, only You, are the Hearer, the Knower.” 36 And when she was delivered she said, “My Lord, I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she delivered - the male is not as the female; and I have named her Mary, and I crave your protection for her and for her offspring (Jesus) from Satan the outcast.”

Sees miracles: 3: 37 And her Lord accepted the child with gracious favor, and by His goodness she grew up a comely growth, and made Zechariah taking charge of her. Whenever Zechariah went into the sanctuary where she was he found that she had food. He said, “O Mary, when did this (food) come to you?” She answered, “It is from Allah. Allah gives without stint to whom He will.”

Better than all women: 3:42 “And when the angels said, “O Mary! Allah has chosen you and made you pure, and has preferred you above all the women of creation.

ISI NC2014 Workshop: Reaching Muslim Students June 2014 Got Jesus, the Word from God, miraculously: 3: 45 (And remember) when the angels said: “O Mary, Allah gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, illustrious in the world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near. 46 He will speak to mankind in the cradle and in his manhood and he is of the righteous.” Miracles of Jesus

Two verses tell about His miracles:

3:49 “And will make him a Messenger to the Israelites. He will say: “I bring you a sign from your Lord. From clay I will create (akhluqu) for you the likeness of a bird; I shall breathe into it and, by Allah’s leave, it shall become a (living) bird. By Allah’s permission I shall give sight to the blind, heal the leper, and raise the dead to life. I shall tell you what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Surely that will be a sign for you, if you are believers.” (By Allah’s permission as an act of humbling Himself – John 5:17-23)

5:110 “Then will Allah say: “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favor to you and to your mother; how I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit (Jibril, the archangel) so that you speak to mankind in the cradle as in maturity; and how I taught you the Scripture and Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and how you did create (takhluqu) of clay as it were the likeness of a bird by My permission, and did blow upon it, and it was a bird by My permission, and you did heal him who was born blind and the leper by My permission; and how you did raise the dead, by My permission; and how I restrained the Children of Israel from (harming) you when you came to them with clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved exclaimed: “this is nothing but clear magic!”

Jesus is entitled “the Word of God”

3:45 The angels said, “O Mary, Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word of Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, illustrious in the world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (to Allah).”

4:171 The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is a messenger of Allah, and His Word which He conveyed to Mary, and a spirit from Him.”

This title “Word of God” means: 1. Jesus Reveals to us who God is; 2. He has the full authority of God; 3. He is Eternal, because God was never wordless.

ISI NC2014 Workshop: Reaching Muslim Students June 2014 Jesus is entitled “sign and mercy”

19:21 “We shall make him (Jesus) a sign and a mercy from us.”

Jesus is entitled “truth” 19:34 “Such was Jesus, the son of Mary, a statement of the truth which they dispute.”

Jesus is entitled “illustrious” 3:45 “Jesus son of Mary, illustrious in the world (by His miracles) and the Hereafter” (by His intercession).

The Quran says that Jesus is only human: He is like Adam: 3:59 The likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, then He said to Him: Be! And he was. * Then, how Come, then, the Quran says He was born from a Virgin by the Holy Spirit? (See Sura 3:47 and 19:16).

The Quran says that God does not take a spouse and will never have a son: 6:101 The Originator of the heavens and the earth! How can He have a child, when there is for Him no spouse, when He created all things and is aware of all things? * It is a Spiritual relationship! (Mother of the Book 3:7)

Muslims say that Jesus is only human because He prays: * His prayer was communion with God. * The Quran says that God prays upon the Muslims.

33:43 “He (Allah) it is who “Yosalli” (Prays) upon you (Muslims) and His angels, that He may bring you forth from darkness to light.” He also prays upon Muhammad. 33:56 “Allah and His angels “Yosallon” (Pray) on the Prophet (Muhammad).

Women’s Rights in the Quran

* Four wives for one man at a time: 4:3 “Marry such women, who seem good to you, two or three or four. If you fear that you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own. Thus it is more likely that you will not be partial.”

* Men are a degree above women: 2:228 “(Women) have rights similar to those (of men)... and men are a degree above them (women).” 4:11 “The male a portion equal to that of two females (in inheritance).”

ISI NC2014 Workshop: Reaching Muslim Students June 2014 * Female Inheritance: 4:34 “Men are the managers of the affairs of women, because Allah has preferred in bounty one of them over another, and because they spend of their property (to maintain them). So righteous women are the devoutly obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah has guarded.

* Treating wives:

4:34 (cont.) “As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and beat them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. For Allah is High, Sublime.”

* Female Witnessing: 2:282 “Get two witnesses out of your own men. If there are not two men, then a man and two women such as you choose for witness.”

* Tilth: 2:223 “Your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate). So go to your tilth as you will.”

2:229 “If he has divorced her, then she is not lawful to him thereafter until she has wedded another husband. Then if he (the other husband) divorces her, it is no sin for both of them that they come together again, if they consider that they are able to observe the limits of Allah.” (compare Deuteronomy 24:1-4)

* Marriage after divorce:

24:31 “Say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty.”
