FUEL COMPATIBILITY SHEET

There will be three types of petrol available after Jan 2000:

Premium Unleaded (95 Octane) Super Unleaded (98 Octane) Lead Replacement Petrol (97 Octane)

To establish if your Volvo can use unleaded fuel. You will need to know your engine type. If you are unsure please contact your local Volvo dealership.

Engine designations:

-All Volvo engine designations that begin with “B” are petrol engines. This means “Benzine”

-The numbers in the engine type on this sheet represent the engine size (i.e., B28 = 2.8 Litre)

-The letter(s) at the end of the designation define what type of fuel system is fitted. A = Carburettor, K = Carburettor, E = Fuel injected (except 340 B142/144 which is carburetted), F = Federal engine. This is the USA specification, so it is fuel injected with catalyser. FT/GT = Fuel injected, turbocharged. Please see NOTE below. EP and FP: Both fuel injected (FP is with catalyser), but with a slightly different additional emissions system.

NOTE:

The B230GT engine in the 1990 Volvo 700 Series was a Non Catalysed option. The engine will still have B230FT on the front cover label but there will not be a catalyser fitted. This engine will still have an oxygen sensor for the emission control system but this sensor is a special lead tolerant version. However, it is only lead tolerant and will, deteriorate in proportion to the usage of leaded fuel against unleaded. 240

1. Reduce compression ratio by fitting two cylinder head gaskets. The water pump seal will then not fit, so a deeper one should be fitted, part number 1276668. Please note: This head gasket modification is likely to reduce performance and economy.

2. Retard ignition timing by 5 degrees from original specification.

3. Replace carburettor-metering needle every 30,000 miles, due to increased wear.

4. Fit modified metering needle, part number 3501202.

5. 95 Octane (Premium) unleaded cannot be used, but 98 Octane (Super) unleaded can. Lead Replacement Petrol should be considered.

6. No action required. 95 or 98 Octane unleaded fuel can be used.

7. Adjust ignition advance to 2 degrees Before Top Dead Centre (BTDC).

8. Earth the ‘B’ Terminal on Renix unit. Use wiring harness (part no 3209295) and connect the white cable to a good earth.

9 Replace existing Renix unit with part number 3210529.

Letter codes

A = Will run on Super Unleaded (98 Octane), but carburettor cars will need a modified carburettor needle fitted, part number 3501202. This is a Teflon- covered needle, which does not need the lubricating qualities, that lead provides.

B = Must only use unleaded fuel, Super (98 Octane) or Premium (95 Octane) Grade. Fitted with a catalytic converter, which will be destroyed by lead.

C = Car can use leaded or unleaded fuel, 98 octane or 95 octane.

D = Can use 98 Octane (Super) unleaded or Lead Replacement Petrol. Some cars in this category can use 95 Octane unleaded after conversion (see numbered listing to determine if this is applicable)
