LESSON PLAN Jenny Hall Using a visualiser in art with year 4

Subject:- Art Theme/Topic: Drawing/ Year Group: 3/4 Painting Date: Content: 10th June 2010 Looking at the work of a chosen artist (Vincent Van Gogh) Learning Outcomes: To look at the work of a famous artist and the techniques used. Sketch using different pencil marks to show detail. Activity / Process: (including focused writing task) Read/discuss Camille and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt. What do you know about Vincent Van Gogh? Pick out some of the famous paintings used in the book using the Visualiser (sunflowers, starry night, the bedroom at Arles etc). Explain that although this story is fictional there are some truths, Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime and believed his life was a terrible failure. Look at some of his most famous paintings under the visualiser (take a photograph on the visualiser of a print/art book image). Use the spotlight tool to highlight floral details of the painting. With talk partners children will brainstorm words that describe the painting on whiteboards. Use the annotation tool to write describing words onto the painting. Go into the nature area and collect leaves and flowers. Look at them under the visualiser. Zoom to show the details of the petals/leaves. Look at colour. Use the annotation tool to write describing words onto the painting. Children will sketch their leaves/flowers on their table into their sketch books. They will then colour them. Extension: Children to draw a section of a Van Gogh painting, copying from the highlighted section under the visualiser. Plenary: Look at a range of drawings under the visualiser using split screen so that we can look at 4 at a time. Groups to evaluate the drawings, discussing what went well and how to improve against the success criteria.
