‘What did you do at nursery today?’ Well I sat at the dough table and rolled the dough in my hands. Mia said hers was a snake, mine was a worm. The lady talked about long ones and short ones, and fat ones and thin ones, and Mummy, Sarah rolled her dough so long it went right over the end of the table. And no-one said “what are going to make - a cake would be nice”

‘Yes, but then what did you do? “I played on the climbing frame and, do you know Mummy, I can climb to the top step.”

“Yes, but did you do any thing today?” ‘Sarah and me went to the paint table. It was lovely; all gooey and slippery on our hands, and we made lots of patterns with our fingers and elbows. Sarah had yellow paint and I had red and Mummy, do you know what we rubbed our hands together and it was magic- the paint went orange! And no-one said what a mess you made!’

‘Yes, but what else have you done?’ ‘At milk time it was my turn to pour the milk and give the apples out’.

‘And then did you do anything?’ ‘I made lovely trailly patterns in the sand and Sarah and I had a race to see who could put the sand in the sand wheel the fastest’

‘But then did you do anything?’ At story time I was tired so I sat on the lady’s knee and the story was about a caterpillar – and do you know what Mummy, caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies!’

‘So, did you do anything today?’ ‘We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Nicholas and counted the candles on his cake’

‘But did you do anything at nursery today?’ ‘Yes, when the lady said it was time to tidy up, I quickly painted a picture ‘cos I knew you’d say “What did you do at nursery today?”

 A key-person provides the initial point of contact between the child, the parent/carer and the nursery. Each key-person strives to build strong and trusting relationships with each child in their group and with the parents/carers of each child. Parents are encouraged to build positive relationships with their child’s key-person. Key-persons will liaise with parents on a daily basis to provide feedback about their child’s day.  The key person will do a 4 week settling in period working with parents and carers to ensure that the child has the best start at nursery  Key-persons are assigned a specific group of children. A key-person monitors the progress and development of each child in their allotted group. To achieve this, key- persons regularly observe each child and record the information in children’s individual records.  Key-persons are responsible for all children equally within their care and do not show any preferential treatment towards any given child.  Interaction between key-persons is encouraged, with shared care when necessary. Key-persons liaise closely when children are ready to progress to the next unit. Transition forms are completed and are passed onto the new key-person. Children move onto the next unit gradually. Key-persons spend time with the children in the unit that they are moving into, so that they can become familiar with the new unit with a familiar person, and start building up a relationship with their new key-person. Children spend an hour at a time at first and then build this up as their confidence grows. When children become confident with their new surroundings and their new key-person then the children will spend time in the unit without the key-person from the previous unit.  When children move to a new setting the key-person completes a transition form which is sent to the new setting along with the child’s development records. What parents using our service should know about what we will do if we have child protection concerns about their child (Adapted from NCMA model child protection policy www.ncma.org.uk

Where our child protection responsibilities come from The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2012 is the benchmark for good practice in Early Years provision. Services that are registered with Ofsted must meet the EYFS standards.

The Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements sets out what early years’ providers must do to safeguard children. It states that: “Providers must have and implement a policy and procedures to safeguard children. These should be in line with the guidance and procedures of the relevant Local Safeguarding Children Board” “Providers must train all staff to understand their safeguarding policy and procedure, and ensure that all staff have up to date knowledge of safeguarding issue”

What our setting means by child abuse We understand that child abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, neglect or a mixture of these.

Our responsibilities under the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Boards' Safeguarding and Child Protection Procedures (2011)

In any situation where we are concerned that a child might be at risk of abuse, our first responsibility and priority is towards the child

If any staff member or volunteer is concerned about a child’s safety or welfare, they must discuss it with the person responsible for running the setting without delay. If necessary, the person responsible for running the setting will implement the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Boards' Safeguarding and Child Protection Procedures (2011). Providing it would not put the child at risk of further harm, we will also discuss our concerns with the child’s mother and father /carer

We keep child protection concerns that could identify a particular child confidential and only share them with the people who need to know this information.

Our responsibilities if we have concerns that a child may have been abused If we notice: significant changes in children’s behaviour deterioration in their general well-being unexplained bruising, marks or signs of possible abuse neglect any comments made which give us cause for concern; any reasons to suspect neglect or abuse we will implement the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Boards' Safeguarding and Child Protection Procedures (2011) without delay, to minimise any risk to the child. We will keep a factual record of our concerns, discuss them by telephone with the local Children and Families Services Social Care Area Office, and follow this up in writing within 48 hours. We will discuss our concerns with the child’s mother and father / carer and let them know the action we have taken, providing this would not put the child at risk of further harm. It is not our responsibility to attempt to investigate the situation. Our responsibilities if a child tells us that they or another child may have been abused If we think that a child might be telling us that they or another child has been abused, we will: Show that we have heard what they are saying, and that we take their account seriously Encourage the child to talk, but not prompt them or ask them leading questions. We will not interrupt when a child is recalling significant events and will not make a child repeat their account Explain what actions we must take, in a way that is appropriate to the age and understanding of the child Write down what we have been told using the exact words where possible Make a note of the date, time, place and people who were present Report our concerns immediately to the children’s social care access and assessment team

Responsibilities of parents/carers using our setting Mothers and fathers / carers must notify us of any concerns they have about their child and any accidents, incidents or injuries affecting the child, which will be recorded.

Mothers and fathers / carers must let us know immediately if they have any concerns about poor childcare practice or harm to children taking place at our service. We also encourage them to report their concerns to Ofsted (Tel: 0300 123 1231)

How we deal with complaints about poor childcare practice in our setting If we receive any complaints about poor childcare practice that is alleged to have taken place in our setting we are required by Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage to investigate it and report it to Ofsted.

How we deal with allegations against staff and volunteers in our setting If we receive any allegations that a member of staff or volunteer has harmed a child, or may be an unsuitable person to look after children we are required by the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Boards' Safeguarding and Child Protection Procedures (2011) to report it to Ofsted and the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), who will ensure that a proper investigation is carried out.

Under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 we are required to inform the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) if we dismiss a member of staff or volunteer because they are unsuitable to work with children.

Recording In all instances we will record: the child’s full name and address the date and time of the record factual details of the concern, for example bruising, what the child said, who was present details of any previous concerns details of any explanations from mothers and fathers / carers any action taken such as speaking to mothers and fathers / carers. Parental responsibility

 The child’s birth mother  The natural father, if he was married to the mother at the time of birth, or they got married after that date but before the child’s 16th birthday(parental responsibility is only lost through adoption or death)  The father if the parents were not married at the time of the child’s birth, but only  Through a court order  By agreement with the mother under a prescribed form of agreement under the Children Act (not just any form of agreement)  By acquisition of parental responsibility by being registered or re-registered as the father on the birth certificate

 A person who has been granted a residence order by the court for the duration of that order

 The child’s appointed guardian or the child’s adoptive parents

 A local authority if the child is in care

 Anyone else granted parental responsibility under a court order Photograph and publicity policy

We may take photographs of your child or groups of children whilst they are at nursery doing activities, trips or during any special events. We may use these images for displays, observation reports, transition documents sent to schools. Some photos may be used for story books that are for the children, parents and visitors to see. No photograph will be used on the internet.

Some photos may also may used for support when members of staff are gaining a qualification.

If the nursery is featured in any publications prior consent will be requested from parents before any photographs are taken/used.

To comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, we need your permission before we can photograph. Collection procedure

 All children have their own individual password that is agreed when parents/guardians register their child.

 We ask all parents and guardians to notify staff if anyone different will be collecting their child other than themselves. We will also need a name, brief description and they will need to know the child’s individual password. If known before hand, a photograph can also be used.

 If staffs have not been notified of changes in collection, parents will be contacted to verify the identity of the person collecting the child.

 If we are unable to contact the parents for verification, we will not allow the child in question to leave the premises.

 There is an age limit of sixteen for people collecting children

If the child is not collected by the appropriate adult at the agreed time, the following procedure will apply

 Wait. A period of 15 minutes should be enough for the collector to overcome any immediate travelling difficulties ie been held up in traffic or for them to have made us aware of their lateness by telephone.  After 15 minutes we will attempt to make contact with parents with supplied telephone numbers.  If no contact has been made within 30 minutes of the child due to be collected, we will then attempt to contact the emergency contact that parents provided at the time of registration. These are kept on file.  We will allow a period of 2 hours from the arranged time of collection before taking any further action. During this time we will continue to attempt to contact parents by telephone.  If no contact is made we will then contact social services help line to seek advice. Outings policy  Written permission must be obtained from all parents/carers prior to the day trips/outing.  For local outings (where children and staff walk to the destination), we ask that parents/carers give their consent for these trips by signing the relevant section on our contact information form. Where possible, staff will let parents/carers know in advance that their child will be attending a local walk/trip.  Staff ratios must be maintained at 1:3 for children over 2 1:2 for children under 2  Parents are encouraged to join us on any outings  A register/list of children will be taken  A first aider will be present at all times during the outing and a first aid box and accident sheets must be taken.  Contact names and numbers must be available for all children attending the outing and a mobile phone will be taken.  Children must be counted on a regular basis throughout the outing, especially before setting off and setting back to nursery  Toilet facilities must be available for the children  Transport must be fully insured drivers/company details satisfactory  All transport must have safety belts and/or car seats must be provided by parents.  A risk assessment must be in place for all outings

Missing child Should a child become lost during nursery time or an organised outing whilst in our care

 Immediately ensure all other children are supervised in a secure environment.  Use all remaining staff members and associates to search the area for the missing child, including outbuildings, toilets, car parks etc.  If relevant, contact the attendant, security officer or other suitable representative associated with the venue in order to make them aware of the situation, enlist their help and enable their own policies and procedures to take place.  Contact the police and the missing child’s parent to make them aware of the situation. Attendance child policy

Session times 8.00-10.30, 10.30-1.00, 1.00-3.30 and 3.30-6.00 We ask that you stick closely to your chosen session’s times due to staff ratios and staff working hours. The nursery opens at 8.00am and closes at 6.00pm. We particularly ask parents who are collecting at 6pm to arrive promptly as staff finish at 6pm.

Attendance Good attendance is essential if children are to be settled and take full advantage of the learning and development opportunities available to them. At a young age continuity and consistency are important contributors to a child's well-being and progress. Also we believe regular attendance at nursery can set good practice for statutory school. Nursery staff will raise poor attendance with parents and carers from the onset to avoid it becoming a pattern.

2, 3 and 4 Year old Free Early Learning Parents need to be aware that consistent attendance is important in order for provision to have an impact. Children that are claiming Free Early Learning are expected to attend all their sessions. (We expect a minimum of 80%) Missed sessions means your child is missing an important part of their entitlement to early learning. Poor attendance may result in a childcare place being removed. Parents are expected to inform the nursery from the first day of absence if not attending their sessions and give reason.

Missing children We ask that if you decide to take your child out of Little Rascals Nursery you give us two weeks’ notice. It is vitally important that you contact the nursery if a child is absent. If a child is absent from the nursery for a period of time without notice the management team will contact parents/carers/emergency contacts. If a child’s whereabouts is still not found the management team will contact other professionals such as social workers, health visitors. Again if the child is still not located, a missing child checklist will be filled in and reported to social care, which will then do their own checks to find the whereabouts of the child. Sick child policy

The nursery does not aim to exclude childe from the nursery unnecessarily. The decision of the nursery manager is final when making a decision about the child’s health and whether they should be at nursery. The decision will be based on the needs of the child and also those around them.

Children with infectious or contagious diseases will be excluded for certain periods. If staffs suspect that a child has an infectious or contagious disease, they will request that parents consult a doctor before returning the child to the Nursery.

If a child becomes ill while at nursery, parent/guardians/emergency contacts will be contacted. While waiting for the parent, staff members will ensure the comfort and care of the child, seeking medical advice/attention if needed. If the child is in danger, the staff will seek medical advice immediately. Please ensure that contact numbers are kept up to date.

In the case of infestations such as head lice, staff will inform parents of the problem and children will need to be collected immediately. Children must receive treatment before returning to the Nursery.

Staff will report any worries about a child's health to the parents/guardians immediately. Parents are responsible for keeping the Nursery informed about the child's health.

The nursery will display in the entrance notice of any outbreaks of illnesses. Please see procedures for illnesses for guidelines of incubation periods.

Under the Children Act Regulations, the Manager must notify Ofsted of any infectious, notifiable and communicable diseases. Procedures for illnesses

Thank you Complaints Procedure Little Rascals Aims To:  Attempt to deal with any complaints in an objective manner, responding sensitively to all situations.  Encourage staff to build up good relationships with parents, enabling them to raise any concerns they may have.  Deal with all concerns in a prompt, responsive manner, following the time scales set and completing on time.  To monitor information and update policies where necessary in order to continue our quality of service.  Make sure our procedures are easy to follow and are well publicised for parents to follow.

Stage 1 – Informal Level:  At this stage parents/guardians who would like to raise a concern will be invited into the office for an informal conversation with a member of staff.  The staff member will listen carefully and respond to the concern in a polite, objective manner.  The staff member may take notes, recording any concerns, so that all information can be effectively conveyed to senior staff if necessary.  The member of staff would then reassure the parent that the matter will be investigated and then would contact them with findings within an agreed time period.  If concerns do not reach a satisfactory solution, the parent will be advised of the formal complaint procedure.

Stage 2 – Formal Level:  All formal complaints should be made to the Nursery Manager, Chloe Spriggs. If the nursery manager is absent, then the deputy manager Joanne Richardson will then deal with any concerns raised.  All complaints will be investigated by the management team and reports will be made about all findings. Parents will be kept informed of all procedures by the nursery manager. A time scale will be arranged between the manager and parents concerned.  Parents will receive a response when all investigations have been made and will be informed if these investigations cannot be made within the pre-arranged time scale. A further time scale will be made.  All responses to parents will be made in person or by letter. If parents are still dissatisfied with the outcome they can choose to proceed to stage three. Stage 3: Parents who are still dissatisfied with the outcome can contact:

Little Rascals operates a healthy eating policy and provides a healthy snack (fruit, vegetables, raisins, breadsticks) twice per day. We regard snack and meal times to be an important part of your child’s day, while here at nursery. We organise meal times so that they are social occasions in which children and staff participate.

Fresh drinking water is available for your child on a daily basis. We also provide fresh milk for children that want it. During meal times children have a choice of water or milk.

We ask parents to provide packed lunches that are consistent with our healthy eating policy. They should contain sandwiches with a healthy filling, home cooked meals, fruit, and milk based deserts such as yoghurt or fromage frais. Hot meals will be heated in the microwave or oven.

We discourage packed lunch contents that consist largely of crisps, tinned pasta, noodles, chips, chicken nuggets, processed foods, sugary drinks and sweet products such as cakes or biscuits. We ask that parents do not bring any sort of super noodles/pasta meals that take time to cook and also home cooked rice that can easily cause food poisoning.

Before your child starts to attend the setting, we find out from parents/carers their dietary needs and preferences, including any allergies. We record information about each child's dietary needs in her/his registration record and parents/carers sign the record to signify that it is correct. It is important that we are kept up to date with any changes. We display current information about individual children's dietary needs so that all staff and volunteers are fully informed about them.
