Puritan Plain Style Poetry Assignment

"God's altar needs not our polishing" (John Cotton, New England Puritan minister)

While it is called “plain style,” Bradford's and Bradstreet's texts might not seem “plain” to you, and that is understandable. But keep in mind that these Puritans were writing during the same time period as the literary movement in Europe known as the Renaissance. If you compare our Puritans to Shakespeare, it is easier to detect the simplicity of their style. Assignment Using the definition from your notebook for Puritan Plain Style, you will create a poem in the Puritan style with the following characteristics:  The poem must be at least 10 lines in length  The poem should contain an everyday object in your life  Contain an extended metaphor—a comparison of two objects throughout several lines of poetry  The poem should be made up of simple (although not boring and non-descriptive!) diction  The poem should have direct statements (get to the point but do NOT be boring!)  Use unique phrasing—DO NOT just write regular sentences and spread them over multiple lines—be interesting…invert phrases, play with punctuation, grab a thesaurus  Contain an apostrophe—a direct address to an absent person, objects or abstraction  Contains other at least 2 poetic devices other than extended metaphor and apostrophe  Add an image that compliments your poem—the connection should be clear and easy to understand  Your final submission should be visually appealing and easy to read  Be creative!!!  5 4 3 2 1 Exemplary Strong Satisfactory Developing Below Expectations Ideas/ Fresh, original Clear and focused; Evident main theme Some attempt at Writing may lack a Content treatment of ideas; appropriate with some theme development; central theme; well-developed ideas enhance the development; may be may be too general development is theme, relevant and main them somewhat or vague minimal or non- engaging e. ordinary existent Form Excellent use of form, Effective use of Evident use of form.
