SCHOOL: Academy at Palumbo Liberal Arts HS SCHOOL YEAR: 2012-2013 ACADEMIC DIVISION: PLT 5 BUILDING PARENTS’ CAPACITY FOR INVOLVEMENT Summary This summary is to be completed and maintained in Tab 3 of your Records Retention Binder.

Explain how the school shall:

1. Program Information Provide assistance to parents of participating Title I children in understanding such topics as the state’s academic content and achievement standards, the assessments being used, the requirements of Title I, Part A, and how to monitor their children’s progress and work with educators to improve their achievement.

The Academy @ Palumbo will hold eight meetings annually in which the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will be informed of the shared responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the State’s high standards. Those dates in school year 2012-2013 are: 9/20 (Back to School Night); 12/5/12 and 12/6/12 (afternoon report card conferences); 12/5/12(evening report card conference); 2/13/12 and 2/14/12 (afternoon report card conferences); 5/1/13 and 5/2/13 (afternoon report card conferences). Additionally the Academy at Palumbo will hold monthly home and school association meetings for parents on the third Thursday’s of the month to be informed of the state’s academic content and achievement standards, the assessments being used, the requirements of Title I, Part A, and how to monitor their children’s progress and work with educators to improve their achievement.

2. Materials and Training Provide materials and training, such as literacy training and training on how to use technology, to help parents work with their children to improve achievement.

1. Obtaining equipment such as copiers, computers, TV, DVD player, periodicals and newspapers will be necessary to deliver the on site home and school support program. Partnerships with National Liberty Museum, Jewish History Museum, African American Museum, U. of Penn Law School, SEAMACC and Citylife church, will provide materials and information to work successfully with parents.

2. Sharing skill development on parenting with each other on a monthly basis (parents mentoring parents) at Home and School Meeting. School Net Training for Parents, Viridian Fundraising training, Parent Academy.

3. Materials and training focusing on the “wellness” of children, sharing curricular goals and supports.

Educate Educators Educate teachers, pupil services personnel, and other staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value and utility of contributions to parents, and in how to reach out to, communicate with and work with parents as equal partners, implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and the school. 1. All Home and School Association meetings will include agenda items pertaining to helping parents work with their children. Invited guests along with the administration will help to deliver the information to parents. College application process is a major focus.

2. Specific targeted staff PD meetings will include staff sharing strategies and materials for success with all members of the school community. Meetings will also explain PSAT, SAT, Predictives, PSSA, Keystone Exams AP and classroom assessments in relationship to the State Standards and the Common Core. Meetings will also include feedback from the ninth through twelfth grade class sponsors with suggestions on how to work with teachers to support students.

3. Specific parent meeting will occur through grade level groups, advanced placement program class opportunities, report card conferences, special assemblies and workshops with educational and community partners.

4. Specific targeted parent meetings and staff development meetings will occur to assist parents and staff with developing skills and knowledge to assist their child and students.

Preschool Coordination “To the extent feasible and appropriate,” coordinate and integrate parental involvement programs with Head Start, Even Start and other preschool programs, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.

5. Understandable Communication Ensure that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to the parents of participating children in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language parents can understand.

1. Bilingual counselor and SDP language counseling assistants will translate school communication in the target language(s) for parents.

2. School communication will occur through written form, School Messenger telephone messaging system, posted on the Palumbo Website, assemblies and advisory and shared with parents and students at various meetings.

3. The use of Palumbo teachers who speak second languages (Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Italian, French) will also be used to communicate effectively on an immediate basis.

6. Other Requested Activities Provide other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request. 1. In partnership with the SDP the school will provide a safe environment where there is a home and school area with a telephone, copier, and computer to support the school in effective parental involvement activities and to improve student achievement and school performance.

2. The school will also provide a Parent Welcome Desk.

3. Administration will meet with the Home and School executive board to develop procedures and activities to involve parents in pertinent school wide action planning.
