WHEREAS: The Sabre Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1969 by a group of recent American University graduates with the aim of examining the philosophical underpinnings of free institutions and working to enhance their vitality; and

WHEREAS: One of Sabre’s long-standing philosophical programs, Sabre Book Donation Program, was initiated in 1986 as a practical application of many lessons learned from the Foundation’s conceptual examination of free institutions; and

WHEREAS: This project makes millions of dollars worth of donated books available to needy individuals in developing and transitional societies worldwide through non-government partner organizations, libraries, universities, schools, research organizations and other similar institutions; and

WHEREAS: Since 1986, Sabre Foundation has shipped close to over 5 million new books, donated by more than 200 publishers, to libraries, universities, schools and hospitals in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Asia; and

WHEREAS: The Sabre Foundation will celebrate the Grand Opening of the new BOOK DISTRIBUTION CENTER in the hospitable City of Lawrence on Friday, May 31, 2002 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 5 Franklin Street; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating the Sabre Foundation in opening its new Book Distribution Center and wish them continued success; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the SABRE FOUNDATION on behalf of the entire City Council.

WHEREAS: This year, the recipients of the Commissioners’ Award for Outstanding Performance are: Tareq Chehab, Donald Down, Domenic Fabrizio, Jr. and Steven Travers; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating the recipients of the 2002 Performance Awards and express their pride in these employees who serve the citizens of the City of Cambridge with pride and excellence in their jobs; and be it further

WHEREAS: In June of 2001 the Law Firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farrabow, Garnett & Dunner opened an office in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: Finnegan Henderson is the largest law firm in the world focusing solely on intellectual property law; and

WHEREAS: On Thursday, June 20, 2002 the firm will be holding an open house and reception at their outdoor terrace at 55 Cambridge Parkway from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record formally welcoming the Law Firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farrabow, Garnett and Dunner to the City of Cambridge and wish them continued success; and it be further

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Julia A. “Pat” (McNamara) Hurley on May 20, 2002; and

WHEREAS: Pat was the devoted sister of the late Mary Foley, Margaret Dunn and Mildred August; and

WHEREAS: Pat’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her beloved husband Richard F. Hurley; her daughter Susan Izzo; her grandchildren Victoria, Daniel and Timothy Izzo; and her sisters Helen Pacheco and Jean Day; and

WHEREAS: Pat will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of this City Council that Sheila G. Cook has completed an historical perspective on the development of the Alewife Watershed entitled “The Great Swamp of Arlington, Belmont, and Cambridge: An Historical Perspective of its Development 1630-2001”; and

WHEREAS: This historical perspective comes at a critical time as these communities work together toward a sustainable future for the Alewife Watershed and Reservation; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record thanking Sheila G. Cook for the countless hours that she has spent researching, writing, and publishing this book and commending her for her dedication to this issue; and be it further

WHEREAS: In 1915, the Boston Foundation was one of the first community foundations and today is one of the largest; and

WHEREAS: The Foundation is made up of over 650 separate funds, which have been established by hundreds of donors either for the general benefit of the community or for special purposes; and

WHEREAS: The Boston Foundation seeks to nurture a sense of community among the people of Greater Boston; and

WHEREAS: The Foundation believes that the vitality of the Greater Boston community depends upon the ability of people to be responsible for themselves and concerned about one another; and

WHEREAS: The Boston Foundation is proud to announce the addition of seven new board members: Richard M. Burnes, Jr., General Partner, Charles River Ventures, Inc., David J. WHEREAS: Stella’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her sons Robert and Paul Condon; her daughter Patricia Conway; her sisters Ann Cafferty and Claire Good; her twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: The award was presented to Dr. Joseph Gerstein who was instrumental in preventing medical fraud when a pharmaceutical firm tried to bribe him to use more expensive cancer medication; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record extending congratulations to Dr. Joseph Gerstein for receiving the Humanist of the Year Award and further thanking Dr. Gerstein for his ethical position on behalf of all his patients; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record extending its congratulations to the 2002 Award winners and thank them for their commitment to Athletics and Scholastics; and be it further

WHEREAS: Asian Pacific American’s are a strong and vital part of the Cambridge community and significantly add to the diverse and rich cultural mix that is Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: The City of Cambridge will host a public celebration commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month on May 23, 2002 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Sullivan Chamber of the Cambridge City Hall: and

WHEREAS: This year’s event is titled “Lessons from the Past”, will include a reception featuring a variety of Asian foods, film and a discussion led by Margaret Yamamoto (President of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizen League), South Asian Indian songs by Ashoo Anan (a City of Cambridge employee); now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council proclaim the Month of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Cambridge; and be it further

RESOLVED: That all Cambridge residents be aware of the celebration of Asian Pacific American heritage during the Month of May and particularly the public celebration to be held on May 23, 2002; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record thanking all individuals involved in the planning and presentation of this celebration of Asian Pacific American heritage; and be it further
