Updated April 2012 Criminal Infringement Notices – Extension to Pay What is it? Criminal Infringement Notices (CINs) can be issued for a number of minor street offences in the ACT, such as urinating in public, supplying liquor to an intoxicated person, consuming liquor in prescribed public places, abusing, threatening or intimidating staff, failing to leave premises when directed and failing to comply with noise abatement directions. A CIN is a paper-based on-the spot-fine which is aimed at having an immediate deterrent effect on an offender. It also provides an alternative to court action. You may apply for an extension to pay an infringement notice penalty, within 28 days from the Date of Service of either the infringement notice or the reminder notice. The maximum extension period permitted is six months. Who issues CINs? ACT Police issue CINs. ACT Policing’s Traffic Representations in Judicial Operations are responsible for the administration of CINs, including sending reminder notices, management of disputes and notification to the informant should court action be required. How do I pay my CIN? Fines can be paid online (Criminal infringement Notice Payment). Payment must be made within 28 days of the Date of Service of the notice. If you fail to pay the penalty within 28 days a Reminder Notice will be served on you with an additional fee added to cover the cost of producing the Reminder Notice. If you wish to pay online, it is recommended that you pay your fine at least 4 days prior to the due date. Information in relation to payment options, time extensions and disputes is printed on the back of the offender's copy of the CIN and also available from the ACT Policing website.
