This spring at the prestigious new Heritage Skills Centre in the grounds of Lincoln Castle, Construction Skills Solutions in partnership with the Centre, the Heritage Skills HUB-Midlands and the Heritage Craft Alliance, is offering a programme of heritage construction courses designed for the contractor, professional and homeowner.

An Introduction to Heritage Construction

A 2 day ‘taster’ course explaining the importance of pre-1919 buildings; it will introduce the following:

 Definition of terms used in conservation  Values and significance that can be attached to traditional and historic buildings  Differentiating architectural style  Legislation and protecting traditional and historic buildings  Decay mechanisms that affect traditional buildings  Repair philosophies and the importance of maintenance  Problems associated with finding suitable craftsmen and women

The course will include a practical demonstration and hands-on techniques related to the conservation of traditional brickwork. This two- day course is ideal for those wanting a foundation in understanding old buildings, maintenance and practical conservation.

Level 2 Award in Heritage Construction

8 day course (2 days per week over 4 weeks) An accredited Level 2 course designed for the student, craftsmen and women or the conservation professional.

Anyone working with pre-1919 buildings will benefit enormously from this course whether they wish to boost their CPD or enhance the profile of their business.

This is an intensive and immensely enjoyable course that brings this subject to life with a lively mix of classroom learning and assessment, visits to historic buildings, debate and discussion. This course is aimed at those who work in the building conservation arena be they apprentice, experienced craftsmen and women or conservation professionals. It is also extremely useful for those in the building industry who wish to expand their knowledge of this area and undertake work in heritage construction or repair.

Subjects covered include:  Regulations and legislation  Materials, their characteristics, origin and historic use  Traditional skills used in heritage construction, their decline and re- emergence  Architectural styles and how to differentiate between them  Causes of damage and decay of traditional buildings  The importance of the retention of features and historic fabric: methods and meaning  Health and safety associated with heritage construction, the environment and sustainability  Ethical practices

Dates of course Commencing 15-16 April then every Monday and Tuesday until 8 May (NB: the final week will be run on the Tuesday and Wednesday owing to the May Day bank holiday).

This Level 2 course is run in collaboration with the Heritage Craft Alliance Ltd

Course Tutor Terrence Lee BA (Hons) MA

Terrence Lee is an engaging and enthusiastic heritage specialist. A qualified brickwork craftsman, he holds a number of specialist certificates as well as an MA in Historic Environment Conservation.

From the age of 18 he has worked on global civil engineering and construction projects often in remote and inhospitable areas. His experiences have cultivated a keen interest in traditional materials and methods of construction and his passion led him to gain the skills to become a tutor, trainer and lecturer.

Terrence specializes in the conservation of traditional brick buildings and carries out practical brick conservation work. He has delivered training, teaching and lecturing in a variety of conservation subjects for a number of prestigious clients, including the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Ironbridge Institute.
