Georgia Performance Standard(s): Standard SS8H6: The Student will analyze the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Georgia. a. Explain the importance of key issues and events that led to the Civil War; include slavery, states’ rights, nullification, Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850 and the Georgia Platform, Kansas-Nebraska Act, Dred Scott case, election of 1860, the debate over secession in Georgia, and the role of Alexander Stephens. b. State the importance of key events of the Civil War; include Antietam, the Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, the Union blockade of Georgia’s coast, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, Sherman’s March to the Sea, and Andersonville. c. Analyze the impact of Reconstruction on Georgia and southern states emphasizing Freedmen’s Bureau, tenant farming and sharecropping, Reconstruction Plans, 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the constitution, Henry McNeal Turner, and black legislators, and the Ku Klux Klan.

DAILY TEACHING STRATEGIES

MONDAY: Opening: Clear your desks off and prepare for the test.

Work Session: S will complete a Performance Assessment based on the causes and battles of the Civil War. S will finish the movie, “Glory” and turn in the questions based on the film.

Closing: Reflection on Glory and Performance task

TUESDAY: Opening: 1. What do you think Georgia will look like when the Confederate soldiers returned home from the Civil War? 2. What will happen to the 4 million newly freed slaves? E.Q.: Why do you think this period is called Reconstruction?

Work Period: S and T will review the standard for reconstruction and its multiple meanings. S will read Chapter 17, Section 1 and answer discussion questions. S and T will review the need for Reconstruction in the south and analyze the barriers to social and economic Reconstruction.

Closing: What is the difference between Presidential and Congressional Reconstruction? T-P-S Homework: Finish discussion questions based on the reading.

WEDNESDAY: Opening: 1. Who was Henry McNeal Turner? 2. What was the Ku Klux Klan? E.Q.: Why would the KKK focus on preventing AA from exercising their 15th Amendment rights?

Work Period: S will read excerpts from yellow book and textbook and complete the graphic organizer analyzing the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. S and T will review main ideas and compare and contrast Reconstruction plans.

Closing: What will be the hardest part of Reconstruction? Homework: Finish or review the graphic organizer on the amendments

THURSDAY: Opening: 1. What happened to the former slaves during Reconstruction? 2. What did they do for work? E.Q.: Why would some slaves stay on their former master’s land in the south?

Work Session: S will complete a double bubble map comparing and contrasting tenant farming and sharecropping. S and T will review the similarities and differences between the two methods of farming during Reconstruction.

Closing: 3 - things you learned about reconstruction this week 2 – things the Freemen’s Bureau did for former slaves 1 – Which amendment freed the slaves? Homework: None

FRIDAY: Opening: 1. What was Reconstruction? 2. What was the Freedmen’s Bureau? E.Q.: Why was the Freedmen’s Bureau so important in the south?

Work Period: S will read Chapter 17, Section 2 and answer the Guided Reading Questions. S will work in groups of two, if they need help on remaining GR questions.

Closing: Review the standard and complete a standards checklist to see if you’re missing any key information. Homework: No homework
