ii ABSTRACT

The purpose of the research study was to investigate if students who attended preschool prior to entering kindergarten were more successful in the following five areas: reading skills, writing skills, verbal skills, social skills, and life skills.

The kindergarten curriculum has changed dramatically as a result of the focus of emergent literacy as outlined in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

The curriculum has evolved into a more sophisticated program where children are expected to have a clear understanding of the concepts of print, which is one component of emergent literacy. The academic focus in kindergarten became learning the uppercase and lowercase letters, their corresponding sounds and eventually manipulating sounds in words to create new words, as opposed to children learning to socialize with other children, specifically in the form of dramatic play. Surveys were collected from the kindergarten parents regarding their perception of their child’s readiness in the five different areas. Data was analyzed to determine the overall similarities and differences between the children who attended preschool and who did not attend preschool. Children who did attend preschool performed slightly better than those who did not attend preschool.
