Notes from 9/01/10 Lifesling Sub-Committee Meeting

The Sailing Foundation Notes from 9/01/10 Lifesling Sub-committee meeting

1. Participating: Tad, Ryan, Andy, John R, Craig 2. Concentrate on video effort; follow later in fall with instructor training material, powerpoint 3. Acknowledge and thank Kevin for West Marine offer of help in animations to be used in powerpoint and possibly in video 4. Questioned whether USCG actually uses Lifesling in its own rescues (after the call, Joyce reminded Tad that we haven’t concentrated on use of Lifesling on megayachts; and this could be a source of additional funding for TSF)—both subjects will be addressed in the future 5. Agreed with outline of video proposal a. Shoot in Santa Cruz in Late September, early October b. Use Andy Anderson as videographer c. Use West Marine boats and crew where available d. Initial draft of script by Chuck Hawley—review by Andy Anderson, Tad and John R e. TSF pays videography, participant expense and makes video widely available to the public f. West Marine duplicates finished product for distribution with new Lifeslings g. Video—about 15 minutes-- uses following format (voice-over except for intro/close) i. Intro ii. Basic doublehanded rescue iii. Short sequence of downwind rescue iv. Short sequence of powerboat rescue v. Short sequence of smaller boat (say 30’) rescue vi. Detail of common mistakes vii. Notes: while to be shot in CA, video will reference TSF as PNW organization; also note—OK to have mistakes in videoed rescues—don’t be too polished (but don’t contradict advice—eg Jobson film says turn off engine exhaust is visible) 2. John Rousmaniere to be the narrator/voice-over 3. Budget to TSF—about 15k including 7k for Anderson 4. John R to work with Tad to help apply for Bonnell Cove funding 5. Potential video dates and Committee members to be on site in Santa Cruz a. Tad, Ryan, John R will be there, plus West Marine participants (Craig now in Alameda on his own boat, may be there en route to S. Cal) b. Dates for names above: 9/28-10/05; 10/8-10/19 (to check with West Marine and Andy Anderson) 6. Tad to brief Chuck on above and to schedule date for shooting and for script drafting and review 7. Tad to work with Kevin/Chuck to arrange boats, crew (Hasse invited, not yet responded
