Accelerated Biology Genetics Research Project
Throughout this school year, you are not only learning science, but also learning skills that help you to do science. Whether you will be using these skills as scientists, or in your everyday life, these skills will help you. So far, you have had some practice with designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. Now, you will practice doing background research and presenting information to an audience. If a scientist performs an experiment, he or she does not do it without first knowing a lot about the topic. Also, scientists must present their information to other scientists. Clear communication skills are extremely important. During the next several weeks, you and a partner will be doing some background research on a topic that relates to genetics, DNA or biotechnology. You will then organize your information into a computer slideshow presentation for the class.
How will this work? 1. You will learn some researching techniques. Your research will require a variety of sources: newspapers, magazines, journals, books, and the Internet. The librarians will show you how to do a proper Internet search and use proquest to get periodical articles. 2. You will choose your partner and topic. 3. Most of your research will be done outside of class. You may ask for passes to go to the library or computer lab during your study hall or lunch. 4. Final slide show projects must be submitted to me on flash drive and submitted in class on 1/3/12. You may also submit by email to [email protected] before class on 1/3/12 5. The following will be required for your presentation.
Introduction – Why is this topic important? Gain the attention of your audience.
Science behind it – Explain to the class what it is all about. Cover the categories and answer the questions outlined on the rubric. Be sure to define all new/important vocabulary words. Assume we know nothing and you are the “expert!” For example, if this is a genetic disease, you will definitely want to tell if the disorder is dominant or recessive, and on which chromosome it is found.
Social implications – How might this effect our society, economy, and environment?
Your thoughts and conclusions – How do you and your partner feel about this. What further research needs to be done?
Visual aides – Charts, pictures, outlines, and other visual aides will be presented on the projection monitor in our room. Remember, just because it is colorful, or you took a lot of time to make it, doesn’t mean it is effective.
References – You must type and submit a bibliography of at least 6 references that you used. It must include periodicals, books, and Internet resources. I check these resources. Printed copy due 1/?/12.
Outline – Write an outline of your project. Do not print your slide show. Printed copy due 1/?/12.
Length – Your presentation should be ~10 minutes long.
When do I present? This class will have as many as 12 presentations. You will present during the week after winter break. I will randomly choose groups to present so you must be ready to go on the first day!
The rubric that I will use to grade your project is on the next page. Please organize your presentation so that it follows this rubric.
