UMUC School of Undergraduate Studies The University of Maryland University College has announced three new undergraduate majors for the fall of 2007. The three online majors are related to homeland security and will support the Homeland Security track of the UMUC Graduate School in both the Masters of Science in Management, and the Doctor of Management Program.

The Homeland Security degree covers the development of the discipline and analysis of current issues, preparing students with the leadership knowledge and skills required for domestic and international security professions, such as: homeland security, international and domestic terrorism prevention, infrastructure protection, strategic planning for security, international relations, intelligence operations and evaluation, and program management.

The Emergency Management degree emphasizes planning and preparation for, response to, and recovery from disasters and events of various magnitude and impact. The curriculum is designed to provide the new emergency services manager, as well as the experienced professional, with the knowledge and skills to be a leader in emergency management in both government and industry.

The Information Assurance degree emphasizes preparation of information systems security professionals, senior system managers and system administrators responsible for information systems and security of those systems. The curriculum focuses on the practices, policies, operational procedures and technology, and future of information assurance.

Conference Participation UMUC representatives are attending the conference to discuss curriculum and marketing issues with participants from other colleges and universities. UMUC is interested in articulation agreements with Associate Degree granting schools and collaborative research initiatives with other schools and organizations. The Academic Director for the undergraduate Homeland Security and Emergency Management programs is Steve Carter. He joined UMUC in 2006 to coordinate the existing fire science major and develop two new majors. He has more than 40 years in emergency management and emergency services delivery including 19 years on the faculty of the University of Maryland College, Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, and service as a rural Arizona Fire Chief, and member of an exercise and evaluation project at Johns Hopkins University.
