Oslo International Airport (OSL)

Oslo International Airport (OSL), the largest airport in Norway, was officially opened in October 1998. OSL is operated by Oslo Lufthavn AS, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Avinor AS, formerly NATAM (Norwegian Air Traffic and Airport Management). Oslo Lufthavn AS is responsible for the planning, construction, ownership and operation of the airport. Avinor AS also owns and operates 45 airports in the country; 14 of which are associated with the armed forces. Avinor AS is also responsible for air traffic control services in Norway.

Performance Highlights (2006):  OSL had the 2nd highest residual variable factor productivity in Europe, 15% lower than 1st place CPH and 18% higher than 3rd place AMS  OSL ranked 1st place in labor productivity in Europe, with 5% and 11% higher than 2nd place MAD and 3rd place BCN, respectively.  In gross variable factor productivity, OSL ranked 1st in Europe, 8% and 12% higher than 2nd place CPH and 3rd place MAD, respectively.  OSL ranked 3rd place in soft cost input productivity in Europe  Other performance indicators such as operating income where OSL ranked 6th in Europe.

Notes and Observations:  Four airlines opened a total of 16 new international routes in 2007: nine year-round routes, six winter routes and seven summer routes.  Project Central Hall 2005 was completed in the first half of 2006. The aim of the project was to expand retailing and food services for passengers in the passenger terminal, including a new Duty- Free shop in arrivals.  OSL has one wholly-owned subsidiary, Oslo Lufthavn Eiendom AS, whose object is to develop and build commercial buildings in the airport’s central area.  The extension of the indoor car park for travelers became available for use in 2007, provided approximately 2,800 new parking spaces.  Two new remote aircraft parking positions were built in 2007 and were used to meet the Christmas rush.  In a survey conducted by the British Airport Authorities, OSL was found to be the airport with the highest proportion of public transportation in Europe.  Due to rapid increase in traffic, OSL decided to start planning an extension of the airport terminal, known as Terminal 2, with the first construction phase scheduled to start in autumn 2009 and is due to be finished in spring 2012.
