Davis read from his poetry at the “Images of the South, West, and Texas” American Studies Association of Texas meeting on November 17th. His poems, “Diet” and “The End of the Holidays,” have been published in Prairie Schooner, 80:3 (Fall, 2006), 32-34. **** Dr. Kara Poe Alexander received a $1600 grant from the Baylor University Research Committee for an empirical research project on multimodal composition in writing classrooms. **** Dr. Joseph Jeyaraj gave a talk on "The Rhetoric of Inquiry: Why I Am a Christian and Not an Agnostic/Atheist" to the Baylor Agnostics/Atheists Society on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 19). **** Jessica Hooten recently presented two papers, including "'What is a Man?": How Flannery O'Connor Confronts Individualism" at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI for the Flannery O'Connor and Terrorism conference as well as "How Jane Austen and Leo Tolstoy Educate the Moral Imagination" at Baylor's World and Christian Imagination conference. Also, her book review of Chick-Lit: A New Woman's Fiction will be published in the upcoming issue of JASNA News.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Department of English is in receipt of the December 2006 edition of the MLA Job Information List. The list will be kept on file in CS 106 for anyone interested. **** Information has been received from The University of Missouri-Rolla concerning an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Technical Communication which will begin in Fall 2007. A Ph.D. in Technical Communication or a closely related field is required. Preference will be given to persons possessing expertise in areas such as new media, writing in industry, information management, and international communication. Review of applications will begin on January 15, 2007 and will continue until the position is filled. CONFERENCES – CALLS FOR PAPERS

Information has been received from the Ivy Film Festival concerning a call for submissions. The festival accepts student film and screenplay submissions online at www.ivyfilmfestival.com.

For more information, please see the flier on file in CS 106. **** Information has been received from the Department of English at Trinity Western University concerning an upcoming conference titled “Through a Glass Darkly: Suffering, the Sacred, and the Sublime” taking place May 10-12, 2007. Keynote speakers include Dr. Richard Kearney of Boston College, Dr. David Lyle Jeffrey of Baylor University, Dr. Maxine Hancock of Regent College, Dr. Jens Zimmermann (the Canada Research Chair in Interpretation, Religion, and Culture at Trinity), and Prof. Lynn Szabo of Trinity Western University. Abstracts will be accepted until December 15, 2006.
