I. A shelter so high – Key points 1. A house is a shelter against bad weather, houses are of different types.

2. Houses have different types of roofs. In the plains, the houses have flat roofs. In places where if rains heavily, the houses are built with sloping roofs.

3. A cold desert like Leh has high, dry and flat land. Ladakh gets very little rainfall.

4. The houses in Leh are made of stones kept one over the other with walls coated with thich layer of mud and lime.

5. Changthang is a place at a height of almost 5000 metres. It is difficult to breathe here normally as the oxygen level is less at high altitudes.

6. Changpa is a tribe that lives on mountains. The Changpa tribe has only about 5000 people. The Changpas are always on the move with their goats and sheep. Their goats are their only treasure.

7. Changpas have special goats from which they get wool for making Pashmina wool.

8. Changpas stay in tents called Rebo. It is as big as a room in our house.

9. Sheep and goats are kept in Lekha.

10. Tourists who come to Srinagar love to stay in house boats. Many families in Srinagar live in a donga.
