 3 Main Idea – what the story was mostly about. Look at the title, first sentence or how many times a word is repeated over and over.

 ** Supporting Details of Main Idea – these are the small pieces that support or back up what the main idea is. Think of a house on stilts: The house is the main idea and the stilts are the pieces that hold the house up in the air. Without them, the house would not have a good foundation or be able to stand up.

 3 Cause and Effect - o Cause is the WHY something happens. This event must occur first. o Effect is WHAT happened because of the cause! This event happens second. Example: When Anna fell out of the tree house, she broke her arm.  Cause-fell out of tree house  Effect – she broke her arm

 6 Draw conclusion or make an inference – reading between the lines. You have to use the clues in the story plus what you already know (SCHEMA) to make a good guess about what is going on. It’s like being a detective and figuring out a mystery using the clues and what you already know. Example: You see twinkling lights, elves and reindeer. What time of year do you think it is? What holiday is coming up? ______

 3 Author’s Point, Evidence or Reasons – what was the author trying to tell you? What evidence or reason did he give to support what he was writing about? Example: Is the author trying to convince you to recycle? Did he tell you why it was good for the environment? What details did he use to encourage you to recycle?

 7 Describe Characters and events – what was the character feeling? Why did they think that way? What did the character do in the story that makes you describe them as that kind of character? What is the setting of the story and how did that influence what happened? Example: In James and the Giant Peach, the Aunts were horrible, wicked women. The evidence or reason I say that is they yelled at James, made him work all the time and didn’t feed him.

 3 Summarize – what was the play or story about? Use details from the story or play to tell someone about what you read. Example: In James and the Giant Peach, a summary for the book would be: A boy is orphaned and sent to live with his awful Aunts. He and several insects are given magic crystals that change their lives forever.
