2 We are delighted and very proud to introduce you to the Daisy Chain Nursery in Emsworth.

Kayti took her International Montessori Diploma in 1999, with the hope that at some point we could open a nursery of our own. Finally, having had our two children Sophie and Imogen, we found the perfect building in Havant Road and our dream started to take shape. The nursery has now been open for 10 years and we are extremely proud that Ofsted rate us as ‘Outstanding’.

Our criteria for opening and running a nursery have always been clear. We want to provide a happy atmosphere where children can develop their self- confidence, a place where they can learn through play in a safe, warm and caring environment. We feel we can genuinely offer your child a ‘home from home’, which we believe is imperative during these early years.

Having two children of our own, we understand the needs, aspirations and anxieties of parents. We know the standards that parents require, and we will strive on a daily basis to exceed these standards.

We do hope you will visit us and we look forward to meeting you and your family.

Kayti and Sean Curtis Directors of Daisy Chain Nursery (Emsworth) Ltd

3 Where to find us

The Daisy Chain Nursery is conveniently located at 99 Havant Road in Emsworth on the A259. Leaving the town centre we are positioned on the right hand side, just past the Brookfield Hotel. We are only 500 metres from the A27 roundabout making us an ideal choice for those parents who need to continue their journey onto Havant, Portsmouth, Chichester or beyond.

We have our own driveway for easy dropping off and collection. If you wish to spend longer at the nursery for settling in or to speak with a member of staff you are welcome to park in the spaces provided. We ask that on no account do you park on the double yellow lines outside the property and encourage you to take care when you leave the drive as there is a cycle track which runs all the way along the A259.

4 About the Nursery

Built in 1895, the building benefits from spacious rooms and high ceilings. The ground floor caters for children between 2¼years and school age. We call this group the “Wise Owls”. The layout provides children with access to the garden both for free play and for learning which is a fundamental goal of the National Curriculum. The conservatory is available for water and messy play, arts and crafts, and physical play, and acts as a wonderful interface between the main classroom and the garden.

There are children’s toilets, a disabled toilet and the Nursery office. Outside, we have a beautiful walled garden, including a sand pit, outside toys and the children’s garden patch, where we have successfully grown our own organic fruit and vegetables! All the food is cooked on site in our kitchen and the children eat together with the staff in the conservatory.

5 Upstairs we have two rooms that make up the Baby Unit for children between 3 months and 2 ¼ years of age, known as “Hedgehogs” and “Squirrels”. There is a separate sleep room for the children to ensure they are able to get proper sleep in a beautifully tranquil environment. We have a baby monitoring system and in addition, the babies are checked every fifteen minutes by a member of staff.

The staff ratio is 1:3 and we ensure the individual needs of each baby are met with singing, books, multi-sensorial and physical play and of course lots of cuddles. For the crawlers and toddlers, activities are developed further to encourage exploration, and self-confidence.

6 Curriculum

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which has at its core, 4 themes:-

1. A Unique Child – every child is a competent learner who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. 2. Positive Relationships – children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and a key person 3. Enabling Environments – the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. 4. Learning and Development – children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.

Learning and Development is covered in 7 further areas:-

Prime Areas:-  Personal, Social and Emotional Development  Physical Development  Communication and Language

Specific Areas:-  Literacy  Mathematics  Understanding of the World  Expressive Arts and Design

Using the Free-flow system the staff set up numerous activities for the children to access, covering all areas of learning space – the classrooms, the conservatory and the garden.

The staff observe each child as they use the equipment and then adapt activities to fit their own stage of development, so if a child is obviously finding a task very easy, they can change or add to the activity to ensure that they are being stretched and challenged. Play underpins the delivery of the whole curriculum.

7 Sample Nursery Menu The nursery has a 4 week menu, which rotates to ensure that the children get to try all the dishes and enjoy the variety that the menu offers. The weekly menu is displayed on the parent notice board. All our sauces are made from fresh ingredients and our biscuits and cakes are homemade to minimise unnecessary additives into the children’s diet.

We continually seek feedback about the menu, predominantly from the children of course, however we would be delighted to hear your views as well. Generally we have a winter and a summer menu, however the meals are reviewed throughout the year and we are constantly looking for inspirational dishes! If we find that a certain combination is not working we will change it. We are happy to cater for all restricted diets and will work closely with the parents to ensure that their child is provided with healthy food.

10 Everything you need to know about the Daisy Chain Nursery

Aims and Objectives – At the Daisy Chain Nursery children are able to learn through play in a happy, safe and welcoming environment. We offer a real home from home experience with home cooked food and a beautiful garden for outdoor fun and learning.

Activities – The activities that we provide are designed to extend the children’s knowledge and skills, and cover all aspects of the national curriculum. Our equipment is developmentally appropriate to the children in that area and meets BSN Safety standard.

A Daily Diary for Babies- All the children in the baby room have a daily diary. It provides you with information about the activities that your child has participated in during the day, as well as detail of their routine. There is also a section for you to write in so that you can let us know about any new interests your child has, their likes and dislikes out of nursery; anything you think your child’s key person may find useful when planning their development.

Behaviour – All staff working at the nursery act as children’s role models. We encourage the children to be polite, by teaching them to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and to be friendly to everyone around them. A full copy of our behaviour policy is available below the Parents information board. Should you have any queries with the way we manage behaviour, please don’t hesitate to talk to us about it.

Checks on staff – All our staff have undergone enhanced police checks through the Disclosure and Barring Service. Any students or visitors to the nursery who do not hold a current DBS will be accompanied at all times by a qualified member of staff.

11 Clothing – Please make sure that your child is dressed in appropriate clothing when attending nursery. All of the children have access to paints, glue, sand, water, mud in the garden etc, so please keep this in mind when selecting clothes for them to wear. We do have a range of Daisy Chain t-shirts and fleeces embellished with the nursery logo, and very reasonably priced. Please ask for more details. All outer clothing must be named.

Cooking – We know how much children love to cook and we will include it as part of the curriculum. We hope that the nursery kitchen will become a key part of nursery life, so that we can encourage healthy eating habits at an early age.

Conservatory – Our large conservatory will provide children with daily access to painting, water play, sand, woodwork and all types of messy play. The children will also have their meals in the conservatory, along with the staff.

Complaints – If you ever have any concerns with the nursery, please come and discuss your anxieties with your child’s key person or a member of the management team. We operate an open door and phone policy, and would encourage you to give us any feedback on areas where we can improve our service. A full copy of the complaints procedure is available from the office.

Child Protection- All parents and carers must be aware that we are obliged by law to inform Social Services if we have concerns about a child’s welfare. The safeguarding of the children in our care may include a duty to share confidential information with others involved in protecting children.

Drop In Sessions – On occasions, the nursery will invite parents or family members to come and spend time with staff and children at the nursery. This provides an opportunity for parents to meet other parents whom they might not have met before and to see nursery life in action!

12 Equal Opportunities – We operate a strict equal opportunities policy that applies to both staff and children. Each child and adult is treated as an individual regardless of age, sex, colour, religion or ethnic background. A full copy of our Equal Opportunities Policy is available from the office.

First Aid – We encourage all staff to become First Aiders. There will always be at least one qualified member of staff on the premises. All staff are able to deal with minor injuries, such as a grazed knee. If your child requires first aid during the day an accident form will be completed and you will be asked to sign it when you collect your child.

Funding: How does this work? – Hampshire County Council provides funding towards nursery fees, starting from the term after a child is three years old. Universal funding, available to all children of this age, is up to 570 hours per year of nursery education. The funded and non-funded elements are clearly indicated on your invoice. In addition some two year olds are now eligible for early years funding, and some three/four years will qualify for ’30 hour funding’. For more information and to see what you qualify for, log on to www.childcarechoices.gov.uk or speak to Donna Sims, Nursery Admin Manager on 01243 370401.

The nursery offers a limited number of reduced hours afternoon sessions. Please contact the Admin Manager for full details.

Free Flow Play – Free flow play offers children an element of choice. It helps them develop decision making skills and their independence. It is the role of the nursery staff to observe each child’s development, and present activities that will meet their next stepping-stone on the curriculum. By observing children as individuals rather than as one age group we are able to progress each child along the curriculum at a rate appropriate to their ability.

13 Garden –We have a beautiful garden at nursery, We promote free flow play by providing activities outdoors that are usually associated with the indoors, e.g., dressing up, home corner and building bricks. In addition we can enjoy all the garden has to offer by growing vegetables, learning about the plants and trees and watching the families of birds that are nesting, as well as taking in plenty of fresh air.

Home Visits – As part of our settling in procedure we offer the option of a home visit. This is so the child’s key person at the nursery can see the child in their natural home surroundings. Home visits also provide staff with a chance to chat to parents about their child on a one to one basis, passing on any relevant information that may help settle your child into nursery.

Health and Safety – The health and safety of all the children and adults at the Daisy Chain is of paramount importance. All of the children’s toys and equipment are checked regularly for any breakages or faults. We have a comprehensive Health & Safety Policy which is available for all parents to read. Please notify us if you have any areas of concern.

Illness – We ask that you do not send a sick child to nursery. If your child becomes ill whilst at nursery, staff will contact you to come and collect your child. If you are unable to collect your child, we will ask you to make arrangements for your child to be collected. We operate an exclusion period of 24 hours if your child has sickness, and 48 hours if they have sickness and diarrhoea. For other illnesses please contact a member of the management team to discuss exclusion times.

If your child is prescribed antibiotics, please do not send them back to nursery until 24 hours after they have received their first dose and are well enough to be away from home.

14 Joining in – We will encourage your child to participate in all aspects of nursery life. As a parent we invite you to come into the nursery at any time and participate in our activities.

Key Person System – All children are allocated a member of staff as their key person. This member of staff is responsible for the home visit (if chosen), settling the child into the nursery, making observations on the child’s development for their records and planning developmentally appropriate activities for your child. This staff member is your first point of contact at this nursery.

Lateness – The nursery closes promptly at 6.00pm. Under Ofsted regulations we must ensure two members of staff remain with a child therefore please let us know as soon as possible if you believe you are going to be late so that we can make the necessary arrangements for their continued care. A lateness penalty of £10 will be charged for children collected after 6.00pm.

Medication – If your child is on prescribed medication, then we are able to administer this on your behalf, subject to you signing the medication book. If your child is asthmatic and uses an inhaler, then we need a spare one to be kept at nursery at all times. All prescribed medicine must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and dosage required. Medication will be kept in a first aid cabinet, out of the reach of the children.

15 Nursery Fees – Fees are due in advance on the 1st day of every month. We accept payment by Childcare Vouchers, Standing Order, Bank Transfer or cheque, payable to Daisy Chain Nursery (Emsworth) Ltd. Invoices will be e mailed to you unless otherwise instructed.

Open door Policy – If you have any concerns with your child at nursery, or with the way in which the nursery is operating, please feel free to speak to a member of the management team at any time. We rely on the honest feedback of parents to ensure that we can continue to improve and exceed our high standards.

Outings – We will be organising outings for the children. Parents will always receive notification about this and a signed consent form would need to be filled in. Occasionally, we may ask for a small contribution to help cover any transport that we need to hire.

Opening hours – We are open Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm for 51 weeks of the year, We are shut between Christmas and New Year and on all recognised Bank Holidays. Fees are adjusted to account for these closure dates.

Parents in Partnership – This nursery provides many opportunities for parents and staff to communicate effectively with one another about the children. We offer key person evenings, drop-in sessions, pre-visits, home visits, daily diaries, daily wipe board information etc.

16 It is our intention to make parents feel that they know everything the nursery has to offer their child and how staff work to achieve this.

Pre-visits – Before your child starts at nursery, we offer two pre-visits for you both to attend. This is a chance for you to meet your child’s key person and the other staff and to familiarize your child with the nursery environment.

Qualifications – All room leaders hold an NVQ3 or equivalent qualification and have at least 5 years experience in a nursery setting. Our nursery practitioners are qualified to a minimum of level NVQ 2 or equivalent. All our staff access regular training and would be delighted to discuss their areas of expertise with you.

Registration Form – If you would like your child to join us, please complete a registration form and return it as soon as possible along with a cheque to cover the registration fee of £40. Once a place has been confirmed a deposit of £100 will be required to secure your child’s place.

Sunshine – During our summer months, please provide your child with a sunhat and appropriate sun cream. We ask that you apply it before they start nursery, and we will re-apply it when they go outside.

Snack Bar – We provide children with a varied snack menu and encourage the children to pour their own drink of either milk or water.

Suggestions and Comments Box – If you have any suggestions for our nursery, please feel free to write these down and post them in our suggestions box below the Parents Information Board.

17 Transition to school – We are developing links to the local primary schools to make the transition from nursery to school as easy as possible for the children.

Upset tummies – Please do not bring your child to nursery if they have an upset tummy, or are vomiting. Please allow a clear 24 hours from the last episode of illness, to prevent any outbreaks.

Vouchers – The nursery is able to accept childcare vouchers. Please let the Manager or administrator know if you wish to use these to offset your fees.

Vegetable Patch – We have incorporated a vegetable patch into the garden so that the children can grow their own flowers and vegetables and take pride from tending plants. If the vegetables are a success we hope to incorporate them into the lunchtime menu!

What you need to provide for your child – As part of registration we provide your child with a Daisy Chain Bag. Please use this everyday to ensure we have a spare set of clothes (in case they get messy or wet), and a suitable hat. We ask parents to bring in enough nappies for the session; however we supply wipes, and nappy sacks. Parents will need to supply formula until their child moves onto whole milk.

Wellies – We would like the children to have the opportunity to play in the garden in all weathers so would ask that you provide a pair of wellies to leave at nursery. Please remember to replace them when your child’s feet grow!

Waiting List – We operate a waiting list at the Daisy Chain and places are available on a first come, first served basis.

18 eXtra Sessions – If you require an additional session for your child, please see their key person or the Admin Manager.

Yummy food! We know how important good nutrition is to the healthy development of our children, and nursery is the perfect place to start educating children about healthy eating.

The nursery offers a 4 week menu which rotates on itself to ensure that the children experience all our dishes. Those children who are at nursery for a full day will have access to at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day. The meals are prepared on site by qualified staff. All our sauces are made from fresh ingredients and we make all our own cakes and biscuits to avoid unnecessary additives.

Our staff will eat with the children, encouraging them to taste the food and engaging in conversation to make meal times a social part of the day. We will encourage the children to talk to us about the foods that they enjoy and would appreciate feedback from parents regarding the menu selection.

Zzzzzzzzzz – We have a separate baby sleep room for the 0-2 year olds. Blankets and pillows are also provided for those Wise Owls who need a rest during the day.

Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus. We hope that you have found this of benefit. If you have any further questions, please contact the nursery staff who will be happy to assist you.
