August 22, 2011 Coach Irons Applied English/Math Ponder High School

Dear Parent/ Guardian:

I am excited to be teaching your child this year. I would like to take the opportunity to make you aware of the ways that you can help your child be successful in my class. As well as what we will be doing this year, along with my expectations of your child. I will be teaching all Applied English classes, and will be co-teaching the Applied Math class along with Coach Rodgers, a Jr. High Reading Class and Jr. High Study Skills along with coaching duties. First of all I want to emphasize the importance of attendance. Because this is an applied class, there will be lots of one on one teaching and direct teaching, with little homework. I feel this works better for the fact that I can be there to work with the students when they need. I also feel that it is important for you to know the progress of your student, during the third week of each six-week grading period; I will send home a progress report showing each assignment and the corresponding grade along with student’s current average. My goal for this year is for the students to receive as much practice necessary in order to master the EOC/TAKS test along with meeting the requirements for them to receive a full English credit towards graduation. I will also being doing real world experience with your child to help prepare them for the world outside of school. We will be learning how to fill out applications, conduct job interviews, along with other practicums necessary for today’s growing changing world. As you may know each student is required to participate in the Accelerated Reading program, each student will be required to obtain 10 points per six weeks. As a class we will use most Fridays to meet the goal. As for my expectations of your student, I expect them to respect me and any others who maybe in class rather it be students or adults. They come prepared for class, and come with a good attitude, and for them to know I am here to help them be successful.

I hope that this brief overview of my class and expectations will be helpful to you, and that you will encourage your student to do his/her best throughout this year. The quickest way of communication with me is via e-mail. My e-mail is [email protected] and my school number is (940) 479-8442. My conference period is 1:46-2:31 or before and after school if needed. You may also access my web page at http://www.ponderisd.net/mirons, to find out more information about myself and information about my class. I am looking forward to wonderful school year, and great experience working with you and your student.\

Sincerely, Coach Irons

Classroom Behavior and Expectations

Be on Time --- Greet Teacher and Classmates----Have Materials Ready ---Listen and Follow Directions---Keep Hands, Feet and Objects to yourself---Show Respect to others---Clean up area before leaving room---Teacher will dismiss class not bell Attitude makes a difference!!!!

Goals and Objectives- My goal for this year is for the students to receive as much practice necessary in order to master the TAKS along with meeting the requirements for them to receive a full English credit towards graduation. I will also being doing real world experience with your child to help prepare them for the world outside of school. We will be learning how to fill out applications, conduct job interviews, along with other practicums necessary for today’s growing changing world.

Disciplinary Actions- I feel that as High School students, they should be knowledgeable of the expectations and consequences that are expected and given in a classroom setting. Such as showing respect following instructions, participating in class learning, abiding by school polices and classroom procedures. Failure to follow these expectations could result in the following consequences or consequences deemed appropriate by teacher or Ponder ISD administration. *1st offense- may include warning, change in seat assignment, and conference with teacher, documentation of offense, detention, or parent contact. If a detention is missed it will be rescheduled and time will be doubled. Students not serving detention will be referred to principal. *2nd offense- - may include warning, change in seat assignment, and conference with teacher, documentation of offense, detention, or parent contact, community service *3rd offense- referral to the principal, documentation and parent contact *Severe offense- immediate principal referral and documentation accordance with the Student Code of Conduct *Failure to attend assigned detention and/or community service project- immediate principal referral and documentation, along with possible ISS or alternative school *The no tolerance policy applies regarding substitutes; inappropriate behavior and will be automatically referred to the principals office.

Beginning and Ending of Class- Students should be in seats with materials ready when the bell rings. Students should be listening for teacher to begin class or working on bell work. Students will pick up all trash and clean work area before leaving class. Teacher will dismiss class not bell.

Homework and Daily work- Most work will be done in class, in the event a student is absent from class they will be allowed adequate days to get it done. Example: if a student misses 2 days they will have 2 days to get the work done and turned the day they return is counted as a day ONE.

Grading Policy- Six weeks grades are determined by following calculations 25% Homework and Dailey Work 25% Vocabulary 25% Test and Quizzes 15% Bell Work and Journals 10% Accelerated Reading

Grading Scale- 90-100----A 80-89------B 70-79------C Below 70---Failing

Friday Frenzies- Most Fridays will consist of Vocabulary Quizzes, AR Readings, and make-up work. Also there may be days that time will be set a side to work on other work or read. Students must have work with them no one will be able to leave to get it. Students must bring with them a reading book daily.

Tardy Policy- 1st offense warning from teacher, 2nd offense Teacher detention, 3rd offense two “0” hour detentions with office referral, 4th offense one “0” hour detention five hours of PHS service *Repetitive tardiness will result in ISS or alternative. I will have a tardy notebook that you will sign and date for each tardy, so that there will be no confusion on the amount of tardies.

Tardy Excuses- passes written by other teachers to excuse from not being in class should be on official paper. Teacher must also confirm excused tardy with me through email. Repeated late behavior is not acceptable even with teacher’s permission Bathroom Breaks- bathroom breaks should be taken during passing periods, unless it is an emergency. Students should still receive permission and a pass from teacher, and go directly to bathroom and back to class.

* I feel that if all students follow these rules and expectations we will have a great year. And will be able to focus on the learning experience rather than the discipline.
