6 4 3 3 2 Figure 1 shows the Back-to-back stem and leaf plot of the achievement scores of Math and Reading from the National Assessment of Educational Progress of the selected states. Math has the large variation in the achievement scores. Math also has more achievement scores in the class 50-59. Both distributions are peaked in the class 60-69. Reading has more achievement score in this class.

13. Absences and Final Grades An educator wants to see if there is a relationship between the number of absences a student has and his or her final grade in a course. Draw a scatter plot and comment on the nature of the relationship.

Scatter plot (figure 2)

Figure 2 shows the relationship between the number of absences a student has and his or her final grade in a course using scatter plot method. The pattern is a negative linear relationship because the points fall in a descending order from left to right. The relationship then is that as the number of absences is inversely proportional to the final grade. The highest final grade is 96 with 2 absents, then followed by 94 with 0 absent. The lowest grade is 65 with 12 absents.
