Theater Syllabus Mrs. Haddix Room 110

Class Objective: To introduce students to the structure of drama, the history of drama, the technical element of theater, and to perform to an elementary audience.

Concepts Covered: Quality, Resonance, Nasality, Pitch, Inflection, Monotone, Volume, Rate, Diction, Schwa, Voiceless, Voiced, Pronunciation, Emotional or Subjective Acting, Technical or Objective Acting, Leading Roles, Protagonist, Antagonist, Supporting Roles, Straight Parts, Character Parts, Characterization, Primary Source, Secondary Sources, Body Language, Master Gesture, Inflection, Subtext, Substitution, Improvisation, Paraphrasing

Materials Needed: pen or pencil, paper, binder, old clothes when necessary.

Textbook: We will be using the textbook: The Stage and the School. These will be stored in the classroom and used for in-class projects and assignments. This theater class will be studying Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

Timeline: (Aug. 15-17) Week 1: Syllabus, Ch. 3 & Improvisation Basics

(Aug. 20-24) Week 2: Chapter 3, Improvisation, Ch. 3 Exam, Read through of “Leilani”

(Aug. 27- 31) Week 3: Chapter 4: Acting, Exercises, & Test, Auditions & Cast “Leilani,” block 1st 10 pgs.

(Sept. 4-7) Week 4: block 2nd 10 pages, set construction (no school on Sept. 3)

(Sept. 10-14) Week 5: block final 7 pages of “Leilani,” finish set construction (Sept. 11 – Romeo & Juliet FieldT)

(Sept. 17-21) Week 6: Run Through the entire play every day focusing on Voice & Diction (Ch.3)

(Sept. 25-28) Week 7: Run Through with Costumes & Set (No school Sept. 24~Staff Devpt. Day)

(Oct. 1-5) Week 8: Performance Week, Oct. 4-5

(Oct. 8-12) Week 9: Performance Week, Oct. 8-9

(Oct. 22-26) Week 10: “I Hate the Mall” Project ~ Director/Acting Project

(Oct. 29-Nov. 2) Week 11: Presentations & Review Ch. 3 & 4 for Final Exams
