Awards/Achievements

The Sylvester o Halloran Perioperative Scientific Symposium was once again organised and led by GEMS Professor of Surgery Calvin Coffey who along with the organising committee hosted the meeting in the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick. There were 200 presentations across general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, ENT, anaesthesia and nursing with over 400 registrants this year making this one of the largest national surgical meetings. Several national and international awards were presented throughout the course of the meeting. The now established ASGBI published paper prize was awarded to Dr Leon Walsh, Clinical Tutor in Surgery, University Hospital Limerick. In recognition of the quality of Irish research the ASGBI now invites the winners of these prizes to present their work at the ASGBI annual meeting which represents a significant honour fo Irish surgical trainees.

The Annual Vascular Surgery training course was also hosted by the Vascular Surgeons Mr Burke, Mr Kavanagh and Mr Moloney who ran an Aortic Master class for higher surgical trainees in conjunction with the Sylvester O Halloran Symposium.
