Coordination with the City and County of Denver’s Department of Environmental Health and Fire Prevention Bureau

Denver Public Schools is committed to making the District a safe place to learn and work. In order to accomplish this goal all open burning events on school property must meet a minimum guideline for safe operations.

All “Open Burning” events must be approved by the Department of Environmental Health and Denver Fire Prevention Bureau on a case by case basis. “Open Burning” includes such events as Bon Fires and open pit or in-ground cooking. The use of a barbeque grill type of outdoor cooking is not considered “open burning”. APPROVAL STEPS:

The steps for approval listed below are not limited by this list and may be modified as necessary to insure the safe education of DPS students, staff and visitors.

1. Written approval must be obtained from the School Administrator 2. Written approval must be obtained from DPS Maintenance Manager, Danny Reid. 3. To request and receive the required Permit for the event from the Department of Environmental Health please call 720-865-5452 two to three weeks prior to event date.

 To obtain the permit from Denver Fire the school must submit the written approvals and the Permit from the Department of Environmental Health to the Public Assembly Special Detail office within the Denver Fire Prevention Bureau by calling 720-913-3448.

 With the receipt of the Permit, the School must follow the guidelines or requirements of the Permit.

 The school must call the Denver Air Quality Control office, at 303-782-0211, to ensure that a bonfire can be burned on that day.

These guidelines and requirements must be met to ensure the safety of all students, staff, visitors and neighborhoods.
