Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at Barbara Bush Elementary! I hope you enjoyed your summer vacation and are ready to begin the new school year. This is going to be a fantastic school year!

Bush will be participating in Breakfast in the Classroom Program for GPISD. This is a state funded program that allows ALL students who attend our school to receive a FREE breakfast every morning whether or not your family qualifies for free or reduced prices. We will begin the program the first day of school, August 27, 2012. Students may refuse anything he or she does not want to eat or if he or she eats at home; they may refuse the whole meal. Please advise teachers of any food allergies which may be unknown to the school. We encourage you to let your children eat at school daily!

Because of this change, mornings at Bush will look a little different. When students arrive in the morning, instead of eating, they will have time to read, study, or finish homework. Parents will only be allowed to stay if there is a completed background check on file and have signed up to volunteer to read with a group of students in the morning. If you normally wait with your child, we are asking that you come at 8:00 AM to allow appropriate space in our cafeteria for children to have a place to sit and read. There will not be a place for you to wait like there has been in the past. Due to fire code, we cannot have parents waiting in our front lobby either. We are encouraging you to create some independence for your child. Students will be supervised by school officials who will get them to class in the mornings. From 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM will be a time for students to read with a partner, study, or work on homework. Students will be dismissed from their study location and report to class to be served breakfast from their teachers in their classroom. Since Breakfast in the Classroom will be served to students only, there will be no breakfast service in the cafeteria.

We are excited to be able to provide a meal for every student at Bush. Please feel free to stop by and ask any questions about our new program. We look forward to every student having their stomachs full and having the fuel to power their brains for a wonderful day of learning!
