No changes to the January 19th Meeting Minutes

Kim Simes sought council regarding the Director of the Children’s Center and a faculty member’s assignment. The assignment requested students to interview a 3 year old and a 7 year old regarding the questions in the interview relating to gender norms and identity. Our concern was that the faculty who assigned the project may not have good grounding in gender identity. The committee felt that becoming a “policing” taskforce was not in our best interest. We would share resources and recommend the Director and faculty connects to discuss this issue with each other.

This brought up an underlying/larger issue regarding faculty’s lack of knowledge surrounding gender topics. Faculty is not in a position to be giving an assignment like this and/or is perpetuating the stereotypes unintentionally or intentionally.

Terry Tumbarello reported on gender neutral housing. The official “okay” was not received prior to housing application information going out to current students. There will not be a gender neutral housing option for Fall 2012 but are hopeful for Fall 2013.
