BILOXI SHRIMP BOWL QUEEN 2016

The Biloxi Shrimp Bowl Committee proudly announces the application and selection procedures for the 2016 Shrimp Bowl Queen. This is an opportunity for Biloxi High School females to make a significant contribution to their city, their school, and the historic shrimp industry, while demonstrating true southern hospitality! The winner will earn a $1000 college scholarship and will represent the Biloxi community for one year.

The Biloxi Shrimp Bowl Queen candidates must be a Biloxi High School student entering her junior or senior year with a grade point average of 2.5 or better. Applicants will not demonstrate a talent but must provide evidence of involvement and knowledge of the community and school via resume’, essay question(s) and references.

The selection process will consist of a thorough review of all application packets by judges selected from the community or state, from which semi- finalists will be selected. Semi-finalists will be required to complete an interview with a panel of selection committee judges. Interviews will be scheduled the afternoon of Wednesday, August 10. The semi-finalists will be judged on their responses, poise, and presentation during the interview. The Semi-Finalist that is selected as the Shrimp Queen must attend the Shrimp Bowl Pep Rally/Spirit Event on August 18 and the game on August 19.

The Shrimp Bowl Queen will possibly make special appearances and must represent the Biloxi community at numerous events such as festivals, ballgames, the Shrimp Bowl pep rally and the Shrimp Bowl game. The Queen will also help present the post- bowl game trophies. BILOXI SHRIMP BOWL QUEEN APPLICATION AND PROCEDURES

In order to be considered, the application packet with documents must be submitted to the Biloxi High School office prior to 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 5. Late applications will not be accepted. Applicants must submit the following:

 A fully completed application form  A typed resume’(awards, volunteer work, etc. – see sample)  Two letters of recommendation (references) from non-family members such as teachers, principals, employers, community/civic leaders, church leaders, or others who are familiar with the applicant and her accomplishments, personal characteristics, and values. Letters of recommendation are to be typed and must include the authors’ signature, position, title, and telephone number.  Typed responses to the essay questions.  Copy of most recent grade report.  Parent Consent Form  Commitment to be present on August 18 at approximately 5:00 P.M. for the pep rally at the BHS Stadium: August 19 for the game, and additional events as requested.

BILOXI SHRIMP QUEEN PARENT CONSENT FORM Parents/guardians, please read carefully and sign below.

I have read and understand the application and selection procedures, and agree to allow my daughter,______, to participate in the Shrimp Queen Contest. I understand that my child must follow all rules and policies of Biloxi High School and the Biloxi Public School District. Applicants that do not meet the GPA requirement or who have been placed on Step 4 or higher of the discipline ladder will be disqualified as candidates.

I understand that I am responsible for my child’s transportation to and from required events and commit to my child’s attendance at those events.

I understand that the $1000 scholarship awarded to the Shrimp Queen is contingent upon my child being accepted into a community or four year institution of higher learning, and that the award will be sent directly to that institution.

I further give my permission for my child to be photographed and images to be sent to the media for publication of the event.

Judging criteria comprised of academic achievements, community involvement, leadership, communication skills, essay responses, poise and presentation in interview.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, August 5, 3:00 PM SHRIMP QUEEN CONTEST RULES

1. Shrimp Queen must agree to wear a summer suit or dress, with heels for the crowning ceremony and other events. Wearing a hat with the suit/dress is optional.

2. Contestants must answer both essay questions in their own words. Any quotes must be properly identified. The essays must contain no more than 500 words and must be typed or computer generated. Downloaded, “cut and pasted works” or the like are unacceptable.

3. Incomplete or late packets will be disqualified.

4. Only 2016-2017 junior and senior female students of Biloxi High School may apply

5. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required.

6. Discipline step 4 or higher disqualifies an applicant.

7. Must make a firm commitment to attend the Pep Rally at the BHS stadium and Shrimp Bowl Game. Other events and obligations will be coordinated throughout the year. SHRIMP BOWL QUEEN ESSAY QUESTIONS

1. The Shrimp Bowl Game has long been a part of Biloxi traditions, with the Shrimp Bowl Queen being a large part of the festivities. Describe why it is important to continue honoring traditions such as these in our community.
