AP Biology Test: May 9, 2016 at 8AM
About the Advanced Placement Program: The Advanced Placement Program enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies — with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both — while still in high school. AP Exams are given each year in May. Students who earn a qualifying score on an AP Exam are typically eligible to receive college credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college. Every aspect of AP course and exam development is the result of collaboration between AP teachers and college faculty. They work together to develop AP courses and exams, set scoring standards, and score the exams. College faculty review every AP teacher’s course syllabus.
About AP Biology: AP Biology is an introductory college-level biology course. Students cultivate their understanding of biology through inquiry-based investigations as they explore the following topics: evolution, cellular processes — energy and communication, genetics, information transfer, ecology, and interactions.
Teaching method: This class will be taught using the “flipped classroom” model. In this model the initial instruction (input) is done via assignments by the students at home. Class time is devoted to review and application of learned concepts. AP Biology has the great amount of content that needs to be covered and mastered prior to the AP test. The flipped classroom model will provide the necessary class time to thoroughly investigate the biology concepts covered. This model of instruction requires diligent commitment from the students in order to be successful. As such, AP biology students must adhere to the following expectations: Expectations of Student Goals: 1. Students are taking this course to familiarize themselves with the rigors of a college class prior to attending a four year university and will conduct themselves in a manner which reflects this desire. 2. Students taking are this course to earn college credit by achieving a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Environmental Science Test. 3. Students are willing to do all assigned work ON TIME. Student Commitment Expectations: Students should make every effort to attend all classes. Students will complete all assignments, quizzes, discussions, and review work to prepare for the AP test. Students will come to after school tutoring, as needed, for additional assistance. Students will commit a minimum of 5 hours per week, outside of class for the completion of work and studying.
Purpose of the Summer Assignment: Mastery of an AP class requires an in depth understanding of multiple subjects. Summer assignments ensure that students are prepared for the test in time by providing additional time during the year to cover material.
