Advanced Placement European History Course Overview

UNITED STATES HISTORY Mr. Burns [email protected]

COURSE OVERVIEW/SYLLABUS US History is designed to provide students with a comprehensive, intensive study of major events and themes in US history. Students begin with a study of colonization and conclude with modern day. The course does have state-mandated Georgia Milestone Test in the spring which is a cumulative test of the entire year; August to May. The course will be taught using a wide variety of instructional strategies including: traditional lecture/discussion format, small group discussion, paired peer tutors, and individual research and discovery. Individual effort and responsibility are paramount to attaining success in the course and on the exam. St udents are expected to read the textbook and keep up with assignments.

REQUIRED MATERIALS 1. 1 inch three ring binder with pockets brought to class each day. 2. Plenty of loose leaf (non-spiral) notebook paper. 3. Blue or black ball point pens.

GRADING SYSTEM 1. Tests/Essays/Projects: 40% of grade 2. Daily work (homework, class work, quizzes, unit reviews, vocabulary, notebook checks): 40% of grade 3. Semester Exams: 20% of semester grade

TEXTBOOKS Textbooks will be issued for home use upon request. Each student will be issued a consumable workbook and reading study guide that they should plan to keep, use, and complete throughout the year, AND THEY MUST BE BROUGHT TO CLASS DAILY. There will be grades taken from work completed in these books. To replace lost workbooks or Reading Study Guides, the student will be charged $5..

ASSIGNMENTS 1. Major assessments will consist of unit tests, essays, and projects. Daily/minor assessments will consist of quizzes, classwork, and homework. 2. It is essential that all work is kept and organized in order to create a valuable study tool for the EOCT in May. 3. Late Work: For each day an assignment is late, a letter grade will be deducted. One day late means, for example, that 89 is the highest grade that can be awarded. After a week, the highest possible score will be a 50. 4. In order to succeed in the class, you should plan to spend time each night reading and reviewing your text and notes to prepare for the next day’s class. *ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO BE YOUR OWN WORK. COPIED WORK WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO FOR ALL INVOLVED STUDENTS.

Behavioral Expectations: 1. Be on time and ready to work when the bell rings. 2. Bathroom policy: Make it a habit to go to the restroom between classes. 3. Respect the teacher, classmates and school property. 4. Come to class prepared to learn. 5. Follow the Henry County handbook. 6. Technology: Other than active note-taking, technology should only be visible or used when it is a part of an organized class activity.

Infinite Campus: Parents and Students need to check IC often for grades and assignment updates. Messages will also sent frequently through the IC portal and email. It should never be necessary for a student to ask his/her teacher his grades. Keeping up with your own grades also means that you can ask the teacher to make corrections when a mistake has been made.
