Unification for Dummies

Unification for Dummies

You’ve seen or have read the “Dummy” series of books: Computers for Dummies, Poker for Dummies, Tennis for Dummies etc… Now you are going to write your own “Dummy” book entitled “Unification for Dummies”.

Today, Germany and Italy are strong, united and important countries in Europe, but that hasn’t been the case forever. At one time, there was no such place as “Germany” or “Italy”, but segmented, random kingdoms and cities where these countries are now located.

You are going to write a book detailing how Germany and Italy became unified under their own central government. Here are the details you must have for your book:

1) An interesting, colorful, unique cover to your book, with your title: “Unification for Dummies” or another title like that one. Also put your name on the cover. 2) A table of contents with subjects and page numbers 3) An introduction detailing what exactly unification is and why it is important 4) Germany’s road to unification. Here, you’ll detail how and why Germany evolved from a group of individual states into the nation it is today. 1. You must include: Bismarck, blood and iron, realpolitik, Schleswig and Holstein, War with Austria, Franco-Prussian war, and the Ems Dispatch

5) Italy’s road to unification. Here, you’ll detail how and why Italy evolved from a group of individual states into the nation it is today. 1. You must include: Mazzini, Cavour and Garibaldi, Young Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, Crimean War, Red Shirts, Cavour and Garibaldi in Naples

6) Your Top Five Steps to Unification Here, you’ll make a top 5 list (#1 is the most important, #5 is the least important of the 5) of the most important things one must do to unify a country. This is strictly opinion, but you MUST state the action and explain thoroughly WHY you think this step is one of the top five most important things to do when unifying a country. 7) A conclusion wrapping up your points and making a firm closing statement regarding the importance of unifying. 8) A back page with bibliography. Here you must properly cite the sources you used in this project. You will cite all of your sources IN THE TEXT WHILE YOU WRITE YOUR BOOK. For instance, in your book, you can a statement: “When Bismarck altered the Ems Dispatch, it drastically changed the course of the conflict. (Dizel, 34).” When you write: (Dizel, 34), you are stating to the reader: This is someone else’s idea that I am borrowing…the last name of the author of the book and the page number will work well. In the bibliography, you will write the author’s name, book, publisher etc… Rubric 5 4 3 2 1 Cover Cover is colorful 3 of the four 2 of the 4 criteria 1 of the criteria is 1 of the criteria and unique. criteria are met are met met satisfactorily. are met poorly Author’s name is satisfactorily. satisfactorily.
