Location The appointee will be based at either Bangor or Lisburn campus but will be required to be available for work at any of the College sites as required.

Total hours of work 36 per week. However the post holder will be required to adopt a flexible approach (including evening work) and to devote such time as may be required by the exigencies of the post.

Work pattern Monday to Thursday 8.45 am to 5.00 pm and Friday 8.45 am to 3.30 pm. Hours may vary from time to time to suit the requirements of the post.

Job Purpose

The post holder will promote the development of the Students’ Union across the College and support the student leadership team in developing events and activities across all campuses. He/she will train and develop the student representatives for a range of roles and lead, develop and manage a range of student activities at campus and College level and seek opportunities for inter-college events.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1 Develop and manage the Students’ Union on all campuses and liaise across the College to promote and develop the Students’ Union.

2 Prepare and organise the election of Students’ Union Officers and Class Representatives early in the academic year.

3 Develop and manage the Student Leadership team to contribute to an overall inclusive student ethos in the College

4 Develop and implement training for Student Representatives to fulfil the role and develop personal and transferable skills.

Page 1 of 5 5 Schedule and manage regular Student Class Representatives meetings and seek to resolve issues raised by liaising with Heads of School and Heads of Units and provide feedback for Student Representatives and Head of QED.

6 To manage the requirement in QAA UK Quality Code for HE student input to programme delivery.

7 Liaise with the Head of QED to develop the College Student Engagement Strategy to include the training of students to sit on college committees and quality assurance panels including the preparation of student submissions for HE external reviews.

8 Develop, arrange, and promote an annual calendar of internal Students’ Union activities to include Fresher’s Fairs, Refreshers Fairs, open days, campaigns and events as agreed with the Head of QED and Student Representatives at campus and cross campus level.

9 Manage and develop the student mentoring programme.

10 Act as a point of contact for students and their issues and provide advice and signposting to further support.

11 Develop and maintain an internal Students’ Union communication strategy (including social media) and prepare relevant materials.

12 Develop and maintain links with relevant external agencies such as NUS and counterparts in other Colleges.

13 Prepare and deliver presentations to groups of students and College staff on Students’ Union issues.

14 Prepare regular reports and updates on the range of student activities and represent the Students’ Union on internal or external committees as required.

15 Complete annual quality reviews and prepare submissions for competitions and external funding opportunities.

16 Identify and support the setting up of clubs and societies for the student body.

17 Monitor and report to Head of QED on budget expenditure.

18 Participate in staff training and development activities to update and enhance own knowledge, skills and professional competence needed to carry out the role effectively.

19 Undertake other duties as assigned from time to time by the Director of Strategic Planning, Quality & Support.

6. All Staff at Principal Lecturer Level and above (including equivalent staff on NJC Terms & Conditions, band 6 and above) are required to participate in evening and holiday cover rotas as required.

7. All Staff are required to contribute to a healthy and safe working environment and to adhere to all health and safety regulations and College policies.

8. All staff has a responsibility for ensuring that risks are managed at College, team and individual level. This process will include the assessment and effective control of all acceptable risk situations.

9. All Budget holders will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a balanced budget across their area of responsibility, including the delivery of any agreed cost improvement programmes.

Essential Assessment Criteria

1 Hold a Level 5 Qualification

2 Have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the delivery and organisation of youth/student services.

3 Demonstrate excellent IT skills in the use of Microsoft applications.

4 Ability to successfully manage large events and campaigns.

5 Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders and influence through effective communication.

6 Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrate that you have the capacity to develop, innovative and create solutions.

7 Have access to a form of transport which will enable the duties of the post to be carried out in full

Desirable Assessment Criteria

1 Knowledge of the support services available to students and how to refer to these services.

2 Knowledge of current issues affecting the student body.

3 Ability to supervise staff.

4 Ability to mentor students and provide advice where necessary.
