2014 Fall Semester – 8 Weeks (Aug.25 -Nov 29, 2014) Course Description

This introductory course in computer science explores the profession’s broad scope of computers, history, theories, computer fundamentals, design concepts, integration practices, and applications. The laboratory hands-on experience introduces the students to the current computer techniques utilizing MS-DOS, Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 (word processing, Excel, Power Point, Access) suits and the Internet. No pre-requisite or experience with computers is necessary. This course helps students become knowledgeable in the basics of computers, networking, trouble-shooting and learning some of the synonyms - normally spoken by IT personals in the computer field.

INSY 110 Computer Concept, duration of eight weeks, is as rigorous as that of CPTR 105 Introduction to Computers taught for traditional students. Due to the condensed nature of instruction in 8 weeks, students are expected to manage their time accordingly with regular study habit. Students may be required to invest between 12 and 15 hours of course work per week to be successful in this course.

Course Goals/Objectives:

The goal of this course is to enable the student to be competent with the basic architecture and operations of computers, both on the institutional and personal level. This course introduces topics on hardware, software, applications, the Internet and World Wide Web, database management and Microsoft Office suits - Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access.

After the completion of this course, students are expected to acquire knowledge on the following skills:

 Gaining knowledge of current trend of computer and network at home, office and corporate level around the world.  Understand some of the terminologies spoken in the IT environment.  To apply knowledge of computers to off-the-shelf consumer products and solving everyday tasks using basic office productivity skills.  Understand Hardware & software basics, information system, Database management and security issues.  Gain hands-on experience with MS Office suit (MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)  Gain basic concept of internet (WWW), Web 2.0 technology and email services.  Understand the logic of programming language and design  Ability to evaluate current and potential future computer technologies and their impacts on society.

Students are expected to complete weekly reading assignments, quizzes, lab works and projects on or before the due dates.

Course Requirement  Student must attend all class sessions. WAU has an attendance policy which requires that you are in class 80% of the total meeting time.

3 | P a g e  Ensure to login to Desire2Learn as often as possible for and announcements.  All assignments and projects are received only via Dropbox in Desire2Learn. No assignments will be accepted as attachments via email.  Invest an average of 15-hour workload in each of the eight weeks.  Participation – students are expected to participate in academic discussion via Desire2Learn. Participation counts toward your final grade. See below for details.  You are expected to keep a Learning Journal in Excel spreadsheet and submit for grading at the end of fourth and eight week.  Weekly quizzes, homework and assignments are due on or before 11:59 pm on Sunday.  All written assignments are expected to be in APA (American Psychological Association, 6th Edition) style format.  Students are required to take quizzes/exams on the day and time they are scheduled. If special circumstances require a modification to the test schedule, prior arrangements must be made with the instructor at least 24 hours before the due date, or the student will need to present a valid excuse from the Academic Dean. If a student misses an exam, and is entitled to make it up, it is the student’s obligation to contact the instructor to make the necessary arrangements.

Note: See the per cent of weight above table and manage your time accordingly. However, please note, even though the review quizzes carries only 10% of your final grade the amount of time you invest on review quizzes will help you score well in bi-weekly, mid-term and final exams.

Pre-week (Aug 18 – 24) Module 1 This course officially starts on Monday August 25, 2014. However, you have the opportunity to login to Desire2Learn and view the course content a week earlier, review the syllabus and obtain a copy of your text book.
