HW # 27 - Experiments
1. (IN CLASS) We wish to do an experiment to see if there is any difference in shooting accuracy. Novice shooters will take a class, but they will use one of three methods of sighting (left eye open, right eye open, and both eyes open) and will use either one of two brands of rifles(Brand A and Brand B). It is desired to have 10 novice shooters for each combination. A) List all the treatments. B) How many novice shooters are needed? C) Give an outline for a completely randomized design.
2. (SOLUTION GIVEN) Wooden bookcases are being finished. There are three different stains(A, B, and C) to be tried and three different varnishes(X, Y, and Z) to be tried. It desired to try each combination of 8 pieces of wood. A) List all the treatments. B) How many pieces of wood are needed? C) Give an outline for a completely randomized design.
3. (HOMEWORK) What are the best chocolate chip cookies? We will do an experiment and make batches of cookies different ways. We will use either butter or margarine, either of three brands(A, B, or C) of chocolate chip cookies, and either cook them at 325 degrees or 350 degrees. We want 6 batches for each combination. A) List all the treatments. B) How many batches are to be made? C) Give an outline for a completely randomized design.
4. (ALTERNATE HW) What will make a paper cut heal the fastest? We will do an experiment and try using or not using a band-aid, using or not using an anti-bacterial cream, and using or not using a cream with the herb calendula. We want 12 people to give paper cuts and try the different combination. A) List all the treatments. B) How many people are needed? C) Give an outline for a completely randomized design.
5. (IN CLASS) Will the herb calendula speed the healing of a paper cut? We have forty people willing to have a paper cut given on both their right and left hands. Give the outline of a matched-pairs design to do an experiment to see if applying the herb calendula will speed the healing of the cuts.
6. (SOLUTION GIVEN) Is A+ cola (Albertson’s) or Big K cola(City Market) better? We have 100 soda drinkers willing to try both. Give the outline of a matched-pairs design to see which one tastes better.
7. (HOMEWORK) A group of 20 individuals is available to do an experiment to see if there is any difference between a generic drug and the “reference” drug it is designed to imitate. We are interested to see if there is any difference in the absorption in the blood. Give the outline of a matched-pairs design of such an experiment.
8. (ALTERNATE HW) Which battery will last longer, brand A or brand B. We have gathered 60 electronic devices that use 2 AA batteries. Design a matched-pairs experiment to see which brand is better.
9. (IN CLASS) Three different TV ads for a new kitchen cleaner are to be investigated. We wish to perform an experiment to see which is the most effective. However, men and women are believed to react differently to the ads, so a block design is to be used. There are 45 men and 30 women available for the experiment. Give an outline for the experiment’s design.
10. (SOLUTION GIVEN) Two different fertilizers are to be investigated to see which gives a better yield per acre of corn. Available for the experiment are acres on different farms, but there are four different strains of corn and it believed that the different strains of corn will react differently with the fertilizer. So a block design is called for. There are 10 acres of strain A, 20 acres each of strains B and C, and 30 acres of strain D. Give an outline for the experiment’s design.
11. (HOMEWORK) A sports therapist has come up with a new injury prevention program. The program takes only 10 minutes per day. We wish to perform an experiment on a group of track runners to see if the new program works. However, we feel that it may have different results on sprinters and distance runners, so a block-design is called for. We have available 40 distance runners and 50 sprinters. Give an outline for the experiment’s design.
12. (ALTERNATE HW) Which is faster, UPS or the post office? We have a bunch of things to mail and will use the regular UPS or regular post office (USPS) method. However, we think that there could be a difference between packages that are in boxes and those that are in envelopes. We have 60 enveloped packages and 40 boxed packages. Give an outline for a block design.
