Special Called Board Meeting – June 6, 2017

One to One Initiative Seth Hansen, Executive Director of Technology, and Susan Fletcher, Director of Instructional Technology, made a presentation to the Board concerning Administration’s recommendation for replacement of tablets for students and staff, to support the District’s 1:1 initiative.

Mr. Hansen stated that the iPads will be four years old in the fall of 2017 and it is time to look at what device comes next. A number of Midway High School students, Midway Middle School students, and staff, piloted devices including Chromebook 2-in-1, Windows 2-in-1, and iPads with keyboards. After the pilot time had expired focus groups were formed, and surveys were conducted, to determine which device would best suit the needs of Midway students and staff.

After analyzing the data from the focus groups and surveys, it was determined that replacement iPads would serve the needs of Midway’s students and staff best. Rugged cases with keyboards would be purchased for 7-12 grade students, with an evaluation taking place at a later date for possible keyboards for elementary students. The cost would be $2,898,800 for 8,500 iPads and 4,000 case/keyboards. The iPads that are being replaced would be sold at an estimated total of $1,275,000. Also with the replacement iPads, Midway will receive professional learning hours from Apple at a discounted rate of $56,252.

The Board approved the recommendation.

2017-2018 Budget Workshop Mr. Wesley Brooks, Assistant Superintendent for Finance, presented an overview of the 2017-2018 budget development.

Mr. Brooks reviewed the three proposed 2017-2018 budgets: general fund, debt service fund, and child nutrition fund.

The proposed budget includes a 2% salary increase for staff. The current tax rate of $1.04 M&O and $0.28 Debt Service, for a total of $1.32, is proposed in the budget and remains unchanged.

The proposed 2017-2018 General Fund Budget is: Total Revenues $61,984,671 Total Expenditures $62,401,951 Revenues over (under) Expenditures (417,280)

Mr. Brooks noted that Midway is projected to receive $1,383,329 less in state aid that in 2016-2017. Mr. Brooks also noted that there is the purchase of two new buses in the proposed budget. The District has not purchased any new buses since 2013 and part of the fleet is beginning to age.

The Board will adopt a 2017-2018 budget and tax rates at the August 15, 2017 board meeting
